[00:00:04] Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the Film Buds podcast. This is episode number 277. And my name is Henry. I'm Elle. This week, it's Halloween week. Spooky spooky. Yeah, we're gonna be doing a newer horror film, which is Megan, the killer robot girl film. Yeah, but the unrated version.

[00:00:40] Yeah, I don't know what we didn't see the other versions. Yeah, no, but probably not much difference. But then we're gonna be doing a older film, a classic Beetlejuice, which is on max right now, at least and probably some other streaming services. So, you know,

[00:00:57] The version is on Amazon Prime. Yeah, yeah. So yeah, we're gonna be doing you know, a little bit of everything, you know, not much different or similarity aside from them just being Halloween movies, but figured we get a nice little spread for everyone.

[00:01:13] So thanks again for joining us. Well, it's been a minute I have released, you know, some bonus shows and stuff on the feed. So there has been content, but not any new content with moi. And you Yeah, a lot has been going on these last however long. Yeah.

[00:01:32] And we won't bore you with too many of the details, dear listeners, but do you want to talk about it's more so been on? Yeah, me. Sorry, y'all. I'll take the fall for it. Take the L on that one.

[00:01:46] I'll take the L. I'll take the L on that. I think September, right? September. I was experiencing a lot of pain in my lower abdomen. We went to the ER and if you guys don't know, this

[00:02:01] whole year has been kind of a hell of a health journey for me. No one has been no one has figured out what's wrong with me. I've done CTs, MRIs, lots of blood work done, and they

[00:02:18] all come back relatively normal, except for, you know, my thyroid and some other new stuff we found out recently, I even had to endure a spinal tap this year. You know, just that's

[00:02:32] just the cherry on top of my ear. So I've been going through some painful tests and no one has really figured out what's going on. And finally figured out, you know, my thyroid is screwed up, which I kind of already knew. Been there, been there, done that.

[00:02:51] Because I've been struggling with it since, you know, I was like 15. But I stopped taking my thyroid medication due to a doctor's recommendation back in North Carolina. And I've just been

[00:03:05] feeling worse since. And then, like I said a little bit ago, ended up in the ER due to lower abdomen pain. Turns out I have many cysts on my ovaries and my ovaries are enlarged,

[00:03:23] which means I have PCOS, which is a polycystic ovary syndrome. Lovely. And I also might have fibromyalgia, which explains all the pain that you can't really see on a MRI or CT or blood work. It's kind of the last result or resort. Excuse me. It's midnight over here

[00:03:48] in Albuquerque and it's also 2 a.m. back in North Carolina. So this is late night episode. But yeah, that's what's been going on to summarize it as briefly as I can. You can't really summarize

[00:04:05] all that briefly. But yeah, that's what's been going on. And so I have not been feeling like recording any episodes. We're gonna try to do our best here and try to record every week or

[00:04:19] try to do biweekly. I think we were talking about just as long as we're putting content out there for you guys. Yeah. You need it. Yeah. You can't live without us. Yeah. And we have still had a pretty good run of listenership recently, despite us not just releasing

[00:04:41] the bonus shows. So thanks to all the new listeners or if you've come back or you've just been here the whole time. Thank you. Yeah. I mean, thank you for listening, even though we haven't been posting new content. So it means a lot to us. Also,

[00:04:57] we're both getting over like a bug. Oh, yeah. Sorry that if we sound like Miley Cyrus, I mean, we sound like Beetlejuice basically. I mean, pretty much. Yeah, we sound dead inside. Yeah. Was gonna say, shoot till I had it. I don't know. But yes, appreciate you sticking

[00:05:20] around and hope you will continue to do so. Yeah, we got some cool ideas for the holidays coming up. Whole Thanksgiving episode for you guys with all the movies surrounded by Thanksgiving and then we might be posting a holiday watch film buds challenge. So be sure

[00:05:45] to check us out on the Insta. At Film Buds. Oh, actually, speaking of huge, huge thing for any dedicated listeners, you may have noticed in our logo and in the title,

[00:05:59] we pulled a Mark Zuckerberg and took out the the. So we are just Film Buds. No more the film buds. We're Film Buds. I feel naked. Yeah, we're naked with cleaner, cleaner, neater. And also that's what my podcast, the Music Buds, it's just Music Buds,

[00:06:18] double whammy there. Both of us on both. So. I feel exposed. Yeah. How could you? I know. I did it overnight in secret. But no, so that's, you know, I did that. I was like,

[00:06:32] been bugging me for years. I hope that is. I guess pun intended because Beetlejuice. Yeah, I hope you'll forgive me. All right. Well, should we get to the movies? Yeah, let's go pick up a doll. Let's go robotic. Let's go robotic. Yeah. So let's get to our first

[00:06:51] review, which is Megan. And we do have a clip. Take a listen. Katie, there's someone I want you to meet. Do you remember how much you liked Bruce? I think you're gonna like Megan even more.

[00:07:08] See, Bruce requires someone else to operate him. But Megan works all on her own. Okay. What I want you to do is take your fingers and put them here. And when you do that,

[00:07:23] you're gonna pair with her. That means she will recognize you as her primary user. She's yours and yours alone. So just keep your fingers there and say your name. Hi, Megan. I'm Katie. It's nice to meet you, Katie.

[00:07:43] All right. So Megan came out earlier this year and is on Amazon Prime to stream and maybe some other sites. I'm not sure, though. But it's directed by Gerard Johnstone, and it's written, co-written by James Wan, who's the director of The Conjuring films or some of

[00:08:01] the Conjuring films, as well as Aquaman, Saw. So kind of a big name there. And it stars Alison Williams, Violet McGraw. I wonder if that's Tim McGraw's child. Ronny Ching, Amy Donald, Jenna Davis, who's the voice of Megan, interesting. And that's about it. And the synopsis is,

[00:08:24] a robotics engineer at a toy company builds a lifelike doll that begins to take on a life of its own. Shocking twist there. It should have just stuck to American girl dolls. She just looks

[00:08:38] like a huge American girl doll with makeup that should probably belong on a 45-year-old woman. Yeah. I remember when this came out, and it got surprisingly pretty solid reviews. It was kind of

[00:08:51] well received, made a good amount of the box office. And there is Megan 2.0 coming out in 2025. Are you serious? Oh, yeah. And so... I'll be there with my little American girl doll.

[00:09:02] Yeah, sitting in the seat next to me. And so yeah, but I just missed it for whatever reason. Just I didn't have enough interest in seeing it in theaters. And we just decided the other night to pop it in. Do you want me to start or do you?

[00:09:21] I think you should. All right. So I like robot AI movies, like X-Men is a really good one. I also like Chucky. Oh, Chucky. Yeah. I mean, that's obviously where it draws from the most. I like Chucky only recently

[00:09:39] though, got around to seeing it. And so I like this kind of genre, the stupid inventor who thinks I can save the world here, reinvent the wheel, and then it turns evil and goes crazy. It's predictable,

[00:09:54] obviously. There's no real... But I'd say it's aware of that. Overall, I thought the movie was, for what it is, I thought it was solid. I thought it was for... I think he was a first time or second

[00:10:05] time director, pretty cleanly directed. I thought it was put together well, written fairly well, and acted well. I think Alison Williams, who is in Girls, I think she's pretty good. And I thought the animatronics on Megan, the titular character, were pretty good as well.

[00:10:23] So overall, I thought it was good. It had some good horror kills and stuff like that, that you would expect with this kind of movie. And I thought it was inventive and creative.

[00:10:32] It's not trying to be, I think, anything else other than what it is for the genre. So for what it does, it does well. It's not a best of the year or best of the genre, I think. But it's still,

[00:10:43] for what it is, I thought it was surprisingly all right. Good score, looked all right. Yeah. What did you think? Well, I usually don't like movies like this. So I'm sorry, horror fans, but I'm not a huge fan of

[00:10:58] like Chucky or like Annabelle or toys that come to life that, you know, start murdering people. Which James Wan was involved with Annabelle too. So he kind of has a... Okay, well, I don't know. I'm just not a fan of those types of horror movies where something

[00:11:15] comes to life. And I'm a fan of, you know, movies like The Conjuring and stuff like that. But for some reason, when it involves a doll coming to life and killing everybody, not a huge fan. But

[00:11:30] I did. I did think the movie was pretty well written and the effects were pretty good. Like spoiler alert, for example, when Megan like pulls the kids like ears, I felt Yeah, that's pretty good. pretty gruesome and cool. Yeah.

[00:11:47] But I feel like it felt like a lifetime movie up until probably the halfway point when things started getting really bad. I mean, Megan sings titanium as a lullaby. Yeah. That's yuck. But like all AI things, it seems like a really good idea at first like, oh,

[00:12:13] here's your personal nanny all the time to watch your kid. But then it takes a sour route. And I mean, I feel like that way with all AI things like the celebrity voice thing that they've been doing. Like new like Michael Jackson music. Yeah, you know, it's just,

[00:12:35] I don't know, it doesn't sit well with me. And also, I'm a photographer. So AI just kind of totally ruins photography. Yeah. And ruins creativity. And like, who wants to do sessions

[00:12:49] with you? When you can just grab a picture of them and put them in a picture now. Yeah. So I don't like how AI takes away jobs like, like, let's say Megan was real. Yikes. But let's say

[00:13:07] Megan was real. That would take away so many childcare worker jobs. Like, yeah, I mean, as an ex nanny, I used to nanny for this awesome family back in North Carolina. Shout out if you're listening, you're probably... Definitely.

[00:13:24] Probably not. I don't know why I said that. But it just makes me so mad. Yeah. That I don't know. That aspect of it just kind of pissed me off.

[00:13:36] Yeah. And in the movie, it does like I mean, I think it's more so making fun of it. But like, where the ads are like, here and you can get back to things that you really need to focus on. So basically taking time away from your child to...

[00:13:49] Right. It's like tablet kids times 10,000. Yeah. Which I mean, there's no deep commentary there. But it's at least there. And it's true. I see it every day. You might as well start calling your iPad daddy. You know?

[00:14:08] I mean, when we go on walks with our dogs, like we see people like walking with their kids like in a little stroller and the kid is watching something on a fucking tablet.

[00:14:24] Yeah. I got a haircut the other day. And there's a kid watch doing a playing a game on his iPad in the barber chair. I was like, kid, pay attention to what she's doing to your hair. Put the screen down.

[00:14:38] But the thing is, though, like, there's this like seriously stroller walks, the kid is like taking in the environment. Yeah. And same with, you know, barbershops, taking in the environment, learning. How a barbershop runs.

[00:14:54] Right? That's why I swear our kids are never going to be tablet kids. I swear. And I agree. And if they do become tablet kids, you can guys, you can send me hate comments

[00:15:07] and come back to this episode. I swear it's just something I've always just hated. I used to babysit this kid and I would say, hey, like, let's go outside, jump on the trampoline. Let's go on a

[00:15:23] walk. You know, if you want to go to the museum, we can go to the museum. And he just sat there. He just refused to get off the tablet. When I took it away, he cried. And then when we finally

[00:15:38] went outside, he was like, what am I doing? Yeah, that's the thing. Like, what is this place? No, kids are just learning less and less on how to play. And they're growing up faster and faster. So things like freaking Megan doll are not great.

[00:15:57] Yeah. And so, you know, I do think she's obviously highly advanced in like, there's this stupid thing of she learns as she goes, which is just you're setting yourself up for failure there. She's going to, you know, but like I thought, you know, like the kills were like,

[00:16:13] I think that the ear thing was pretty good. The what do you call it? The not the fertilizer, the weed killer thing in the shed was pretty good where he sprang her or she sprang her.

[00:16:25] The stuff towards the end where they're about to do the showcase for us, all that stuff was pretty good. So you know, it doesn't do anything. It doesn't reinvent the wheel really. But it's pretty solid. It's entertaining. Well put together.

[00:16:37] But if you are a child care worker, it will piss you off just a little bit. Yeah. So not definitely not as bad as I was expecting it to be, or as bad as others are in the genre.

[00:16:49] Well, the thing I don't get is when they were pitching the idea, the guy was like, yeah, we can sell these as much as a Tesla. And then at the event,

[00:16:58] it was saying she was selling for $10,000. So at first I was like, why not just hire a nanny? Yeah. I mean, obviously I would never buy my our child a 10 grand toy unless I was

[00:17:17] like a billionaire. Actually, even that I wouldn't. I would just buy it for myself. I'm just kidding. So that obviously is a huge thing. It's like, you're talking about the top 1% maybe buying that and then nobody else. And then you're building an

[00:17:31] army of them as well in the process. So I'm trying to think if there's any other standout scenes, but no. Hey, I think it's a good watch if you just want to kind of laugh at something with your friends.

[00:17:43] Yeah. And it's short. It's only like an hour and a half, so it's not bad. I'll watch the sequel. As long as it's not like two and a half hours. Like I can't do two and a half hours of Megan.

[00:17:54] Yeah. Which I mean, obviously they're drawing from Drake and Josh with the evilness of the character, but that's my theory. Yeah, they definitely are. All right. Well, anything else about Megan? I don't think so. I think we can jump to letterboxd reviews.

[00:18:10] What do you want to give it out of five? Um... I gave it a light four, maybe a little generous, but maybe three and a half. I gave it a two and a half. Whoa. No pass. But I'm very stingy with my stars, guys. I'm very stingy.

[00:18:25] I'm liberal. I let them loose. Okay. So Ram rated it three and a half stars and they said she really thinks titanium is a lullaby. And to her, she did. Well, because she's built out of titanium. Yeah. This one comes from Gabby. Three and a half.

[00:18:48] If you cared so much about your dog, you wouldn't let him live outside. Dumb. Bitch. Sorry. He can't cuss because he's in the military. Yeah. You know. So all he cussing is just... Keep my record clean. Me. Because I'm a civilian.

[00:19:04] Yeah. So yeah, that's something you brought up. The neighbor. That pissed me off. The neighbor just left her dog outside and I mean, no wonder your neighbor hated you lady. It was coming in her yard and pooping on the driveway.

[00:19:23] Yeah. So I mean, obviously if you leave your dog out, you're just asking for it to be killed by a killer doll. Also, it was fall in the movie. So it was probably really fucking cold outside at night. Yeah. That lady just sucks.

[00:19:39] And then she's like, oh, where's my dog? Don't treat my dog that way. Well, you're treating it worse. Yeah. Texas justice. All right. Last one. You can read this one. My throat hurts.

[00:19:53] A little bit long here. Stick with us. From Nick. An icon is born. Oh, he gave it three and a half out of five. Megan is way more than just another social media viral moment since it's genuinely

[00:20:05] quite an entertaining journey to sit through. It's cliched, but in a good way. And it's social commentary on the flip side of technology feels especially relevant today. First of all, the casting of Megan is amazing since it's truly surreal seeing Alison Williams and Brian Jordan

[00:20:19] Alvarez starting together in a hit horror movie. Alison Williams is such a natural for the genre and I've loved her in almost every horror she's been in. Last paragraph here. As for the elephant

[00:20:33] in the room, Megan is a character designed to go viral for sure. But she has so much likeability and uniqueness to her that it's difficult to not root for her. Don't know if I agree with that. I don't agree with that either.

[00:20:45] It's truly intriguing to watch the shifting of dynamics Megan has with her human owners and I already want the sequels recommended. Whoa. I didn't know that it went viral on like social media and TikTok. I know Drew Barrymore dressed up as Megan recently.

[00:21:02] I think right when it came out, it may have but I think it died off pretty quick. Okay. So well, thanks for the... If you want your reviews read on Letterboxd, send them our way and follow us and that stuff is in the show notes.

[00:21:17] Yep, you can email or DM and all those links are in the description. I don't have energy to say the long ass email we have for the podcast. Yeah. So, sorry. Social media is better and then Letterboxd. That's where that

[00:21:40] stuff we check more and we're more active on. Yeah. I'm unfortunately just chronically online always because that's the only way to promote businesses these days, folks. And so, promoting a photography business without social media is kind of impossible. Yeah. That's a challenge though, these days.

[00:22:01] Yeah. All right. Well, cool. Well, with that done, you want to get to Beetlejuice? All right, but we can't say it three times. Nope. We've already said it twice. Or he'll come over here. Yeah. So... And try to marry me. I hope not. Because I'm pretty ga. Yeah.

[00:22:20] Watch out. All right. Well, yeah, let's get to that review and we do have a clip as well. So, take a listen. You know what's really beautiful about this? You two kids picked me. You didn't have to,

[00:22:31] but you picked me. It makes me want to kiss you guys. Come on. Come out. No. Come on. All right. Let's get down to business. I got a card around here somewhere. Here. Here. Who do I have to kill? Here, hold that for me, will you?

[00:22:43] There you go. You don't have to kill anybody. Ah, possession. Good. Learn to throw your voice. Fool your friends. Fun and party. No, we just want to get some people out of our house.

[00:22:53] Ah, I understand. I understand. Well, look, in order to do that, I'm really going to have to get to know you guys. You know, we got to get closer. Move in with you for a while. Get to be real pals. You know what I'm saying?

[00:23:03] Okay. So Beetlejuice came out in 1988. Whoa. So old. And is directed by Tim Burton, stars Alec Baldwin, Gina Davis, Michael Keaton, Annie McEnroe, Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones, Winona Ryder. That's about it, I think.

[00:23:31] And the synopsis is, the spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out. So this was one of Tim Burton's early movies. I think he did this, was it right after Pee-wee's

[00:23:49] Big Adventure? I think so. So yeah, he did this right after Pee-wee's Big Adventure. And then he had a pretty good run of movies in his early part of his career. This is considered to be, you know, I'd say a classic Halloween classic. For sure.

[00:24:07] I think it's one that I'd say it's pretty hard to dislike. I've never met one who, maybe not everyone loves it. But I think it's a movie that most people like. And I think it's pretty iconic. Obviously, Beetlejuice, his look, his character, Michael Keaton,

[00:24:22] his most iconic performance, I would say. Man, Michael Keaton has such a broad range. He does. Yeah. I think comedy is my favorite of his. He's very, very funny. But then he can give a good Batman performance. Yeah, exactly.

[00:24:39] I think Beetlejuice just made me respect him even more. Yeah. I'd seen this one, I think probably in college. And I've seen it countless times since. I think it's one of those movies that, in whatever way,

[00:24:52] it's just so watchable. It's easily watchable. You can just kind of throw it on and immediately just get engaged with it. Yeah, for sure. And I feel like it's one of those movies you can put on when you're cleaning and still know what's going on.

[00:25:08] Yeah. You want to go first this time? Because you only saw this fairly recently. So I feel like y'all are gonna hate me. But I have never watched Beetlejuice all the way through. Not until I think August

[00:25:27] is when we watched it all the way through together. And I've heard great things about it. I absolutely love Tim Burton. I don't know why I've never really gotten around to seeing the whole movie, but absolutely fell in love with it. Wyonna Ryder's character, Lydia. Amazing. Iconic. Iconic.

[00:25:47] You have a Beetlejuice tattoo. I actually do have a Beetlejuice tattoo after I saw it for the first time. That sounds like such a person who listens to ACDC once and has an ACDC shirt. And people were like,

[00:26:01] what's your favorite ACDC song? But I did watch it all the way through and I really, really loved it. So whatever. I'm not a fake fan. Okay, I swear. But yeah, I do have a tattoo,

[00:26:16] a Beetlejuice tattoo. It's a hand holding a juice box that says Beetlejuice and with a beetle and then a huge sandworm. Yeah, it's pretty cool. But anyway, like I was saying, the first time I watched it, I absolutely fell in love with it. I laughed. Michael Keaton was

[00:26:34] hilarious. That scene where he's like on the ground, so demons are in me. I gotta get them out. God, amazing. Just amazing. The stepmom in this, I hate to say it reminds me of my stepmom and how

[00:26:49] she is. But that quote the stepmom says, she says, but I must express myself if you don't let me out. If you don't let me get out this house and make it my own, I will go insane. I will take you with

[00:27:03] me. Love it. Also, Catherine O'Hara, Halloween Queen. Love her. If you guys don't know, she voiced Sally in Nightmare Before Christmas. And she even stars in my favorite holiday movie. She's just Home Alone, obviously. She's amazing. Oh my God. Catherine O'Hara,

[00:27:25] if you're watching this, please know I love you. You're watching this Jesus. It's late. Listening. God. Okay, but anyway, the stepmom's hilarious in her own way. The dad is eh, but Lydia is amazing. The couple is a little bland, but they're supposed to be.

[00:27:44] Oh, you mean like the main couple? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think... Alec Baldwin and his little... I mean, I think they're both really good together. I think they're pretty fun and kind of doofy in terms of just like... Which they're supposed to be. Which like...

[00:27:59] They're supposed to be like a farmhouse kind of like couple. Yeah. I love Alec Baldwin. And I... The first time I watched it, I did not recognize I was Alec Baldwin. He looks very... I mean, he's...

[00:28:10] God, he was hot in the day. Alec Baldwin, now he's just a horrible human being. I really liked both of them. They're very good in it. Yeah, Winona Ryder, her look and her character, iconic is her break and then she went on to be in Edward Scissorhands.

[00:28:27] And then her and Johnny Depp fell in love and then had a heartbreaking breakup. Yeah. Yeah, I think Danny Elfman's score, this was peak Danny Elfman for sure as it was Tim Burton. Oh, Tim Burton, Danny Elfman, I love you. Yeah.

[00:28:48] Winona Ryder, I love you. Katherine O'Hara, I love you. Alec Baldwin... Michael Keaton, I love you. Just... Yeah. So yeah, I mean, cast across the board is great. The look of the house is awesome.

[00:29:00] The underworld or the dead world, whatever you want to call it, where they're like in the lobby, you know, there's the different dead people. And then the like shape shifting hallways and rooms and stuff is awesome. Honestly, that's the perfect representation

[00:29:16] of the afterlife just waiting at the DMV basically. Yeah. That's how to torture people. Yeah. So all that stuff, you know, very funny, very iconic and very memorable. And yeah, so I'm trying to think of other big stuff. I mean, Michael Keaton, like the writing is great and

[00:29:35] his performance just adds to it. And his whole thing at the end trying to like marry Winona Ryder is weird, but in the context of the movie is funny. I still don't understand. Yeah. Let's see what other big... I'm trying to think of anything else. Noah,

[00:29:51] how does this compare to the Tim Burton movies? Where's this rank of the ones of your favorites? That is difficult. Because I'm a big Tim Burton fan. Honestly, Nightmare is number one. Yeah. Will always be number one. Even though he...

[00:30:10] Well, I consider it a Tim Burton movie. Okay? I know. Y'all can hate me on this. I consider that a Tim Burton movie. I consider Corpse Riders. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I think ranking the Tim Burton movies, I would say Nightmare, Corpse Bride,

[00:30:27] I'd say Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands. The Big Fish is way down on the list. I don't really like that one. Really? Unpopular. He directed Dumbo, right? Yes. That is below Big Fish for me. What about Sweeney Todd?

[00:30:44] That would probably be next on my list. I don't watch Sweeney Todd a whole lot, though. Like I usually rewatch Nightmare, Corpse Bride and Beetlejuice nowadays. But Edward... I need to rewatch Edward Scissorhands. Fuck! I didn't watch it in October. Crap. Shoot.

[00:31:02] But technically, maybe it can be a winter movie because it makes it snow. Yeah. That makes sense. I think my top three would be Edward, Pee-wee's Big Adventure and then Beetlejuice. And what about Alice in Wonderland?

[00:31:17] It's like middle of the pack. So this would be my top three. Anything else big about Beetlejuice? Oh, here's one little... This has no real swam the quality of the movie, but a little reality check. So when they die at the beginning,

[00:31:34] when they drown, they... Okay. Realistically, it's a movie. I get it. Their windows are open and they drown in about three feet of water. Yeah. You can get out of the car. Yeah. Realistically speaking, they probably would have lived with minimal injuries.

[00:31:53] Yes. But again, not... Doesn't have any impact on the movie. Just figured I... Me being me, I had to say it. I do have to say, I'm glad this movie wasn't made in the 2000s because the CGI

[00:32:08] would have been horrendous. And so, because I am a little nervous about Beetlejuice 2 for that very reason, because I feel like they're just going to add a bunch of purple and green smoke and... Also is Johnny Depp in the movie? No.

[00:32:28] That was... Why was that a huge rumor? That's what they say about every Tim Burton movie. Johnny Depp is going to be in it, so no. Well, the queen of Tim Burton movies are going to be in it. So... Yeah. Wyonna Ryder. So that's all that matters.

[00:32:43] No more Helena. Awkward. And Jenna Ortega, I feel like is the new Wyonna Ryder. Yeah. I think she's the new Tim Burton It Girl because of Wednesday. Yeah, I think so. All right, well... But I am really excited for the movie. Me too.

[00:33:03] Anyway, I think it's coming out in September of 2024 in theaters. Something like that. It's fall. Anything else about Beetlejuice? Well, I think we've said his name over three times, so we might have to be on the lookout. Yeah.

[00:33:19] But no, I don't think there's anything to add. I just think everyone should see it and everyone will love it. Yeah. Out of five? I'll go five for me. It's a fiver. I think I rated it a four and a half. All right.

[00:33:37] Which is pretty high for me. Pretty high. Yeah. All right. Oh, yeah. Letterboxd reviews. First up, Branson Reese said, Thank God Tim Burton made this movie in 1988 and not 2008. Can you imagine what a piece of

[00:33:55] shit this would have been with a ton of green and purple CGI swirls and Johnny Depp as Beetlejuice? Goddamn. Yeah, Michael Keaton is the perfect Beetlejuice. So just saying. Yeah. Comes from Lucy or Lucci. If they're Italian. It's Lucy, it's not Lucci. Hey. There's not an H.

[00:34:20] But it could be Italian. Oh my God. Just go on. If you're listening, let us know which one it is. I think we both know. It's Lucy. All right. Four and a half out of five. If my afterlife isn't anything like this,

[00:34:34] I'm going to be so pissed. Interesting. I wouldn't really want my afterlife to be like that. That's just me. Yeah. Although I would love to like float and dance to that song. Shake, shake, shake, Senora. Just that part. Yeah, just that part.

[00:34:53] Last one, Matt Singer rated it three and a half. He said, You know, it never occurred to me before that the year prior to Batman, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton made a movie where he basically played the Joker role.

[00:35:08] I'm thinking that might be one of the film critics who's on here. Might be. Yeah, so there you go. Then let's end off with Picks of the Week. Slash Picks of the last few months.

[00:35:22] And so I guess we'll condense it a little bit, talk about the big points you want me to go or... Sure. So I guess one big new movie is I finally got around to seeing Oppenheimer, big Oppie, which I love Christopher Nolan. I love World War II history.

[00:35:40] I love biopics, which Christopher Nolan is all like not want to call it a biopic, even though it is. Kelly Murphy, I think is one of the most underrated actors. So I was very excited to see

[00:35:49] the movie. And I absolutely loved it. It's one of my favorites, my favorite of the year. And it's one of my favorites of Nolan's for sure. It is like three hours, but it really has a pretty streamlined kind of pace to it. The score is really good, performances...

[00:36:07] The cast is stacked, like everybody in Hollywood is in this movie. Looks great. Pretty grim, because it's basically showing like this guy realizes what he's done and how he's completely changed the world forever. And so it is pretty timely, relevant, whatever you want to

[00:36:23] call it in terms of that kind of invention and science, but really good movie. Check it out. Some other new releases I watched The Exorcist Believer, which is the new Exorcist sequel, I guess kind of. Yeah. It's directed by David Gordon Green, who did the three

[00:36:40] Halloween reboot movies recently. I really liked the first Exorcist. I haven't seen all the others, but I still like it. I'm always up for good exorcism. Well, now if I ever get possessed, you can know how to get rid of the demon. Yeah. Good job.

[00:37:01] Yeah. And I thought I heard pretty bad things. I thought it was all right. I thought it was entertaining. It doesn't really bring anything like super new to the table, but I thought the

[00:37:09] makeup was good, that some good kind of chilling, shocking scenes. And so I thought all that was good. Definitely does not match some of the better Halloween movies that he directed, but still a solid movie. Not best of the year though.

[00:37:24] I do love that you watch these movies right before bed and then you sleep like a baby. But then sometimes you wake up and you don't even know, quote unquote, wake up and say all this nonsense to me and then you go back to sleep.

[00:37:41] I am a sleep talker or possessed. Sounds like you were possessed. Tomato, tomato. Kind of ironic. Yeah. And then I also watched The Nun 2, which is co-written by... Oh, there's two nuns? There's two nuns now. Co-written by the person who co-wrote Megan as well. I liked the first

[00:38:02] nun slightly more than others. I didn't think it was amazing, but I did like it. I'm always up for a good Catholic horror movie. Specifically Catholic horror movie? Well, like nuns, like exorcisms, that kind of thing. I thought it was a little underwhelming.

[00:38:19] I think the first one is better. I thought it was pretty... Really lacking the nun. Really lacking Valak, which is her name. God, y'all, it's 1am here. We're exhausted. Lacking Valak, not enough really... Not directed by the same person,

[00:38:38] not the same composer. So kind of a different atmosphere, pretty goofy. So not horrible, but I would not really give it a pass. Hate to say. And then I watched the first Saw, which I had never seen. There's 10 somehow.

[00:39:00] I watched the first one directed by James Wan, who did The Conjuring movies. And actually, that was pretty solid. I'm not really a huge fan of this kind of Saw-esque movies, but for what it was, pretty solid, pretty decent cast. Looks good, good performances, some interesting ideas.

[00:39:20] And so I thought as an origin movie, actually not that bad. And it's not that crazy gore, gore fest kind of feeling. So it's not going to turn off everybody. So actually, it was pleasantly surprised, pretty solid. Will I watch the other nine? I think I'm gonna watch...

[00:39:37] I might skip to 10. I don't know. We'll see. And then that's a couple of Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies that were okay. Watched those at work. Then came home and slept like a baby.

[00:39:49] Yeah. I mean, I have other things I watched, but those are, I guess, some of the newer things or the first time watches for little old me. What'd you watch, honey? I rewatched Just Like Heaven, which is horrible. I rewatched one of my favorite movies, Black Swan.

[00:40:11] I don't know why I love that movie so much. It's a great movie. I just love the dancing and I loved that it's like fucked up and dark. Watched Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, obviously. I watched

[00:40:29] All Good Things for the first time. I haven't seen that in a long time. More like All Bad Things. Whoa, sorry, Ryan. Really fucking creepy. It is creepy. Very unsettling. It starts out with like, oh, this seems like a decent couple and then, oh God, just horrible. Yeah.

[00:40:51] Horrible, horrible. And I watched it right before bed and I shouldn't have. You pulled a Henry. Then I had Nightmares. So I don't understand how you don't have Nightmares when watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don't know. I did watch two in a row, but yeah.

[00:41:07] Besides movies, I've been watching... What have we been watching? We have become 60 year old people and we've been watching Law & Order Special Victims Unit and we're hooked. We've gone through three seasons. Yeah. And there's like 25, something like that.

[00:41:27] So I saw a few episodes probably early in the year on TV. I was like, wow, this show is actually pretty decent. And then forgot about it and then you started watching it kind of out of the blue. Yeah, because I've watched everything.

[00:41:47] The new season of American Horror Story is on pause because of the strike. So I've been watching that every week and then... God, what else ended that I was watching? I was watching something else weekly that I can't remember. But anyway, I've rewatched

[00:42:08] all of the American Horror Story seasons that I haven't seen that I've been wanting to see. I refuse to watch Roanoke. I've heard terrible things about that. Going on strike. I refuse to watch New York City. I refuse to watch that. Oh, I'm trying to watch the

[00:42:27] vampire one and I've had to stop three times. And I find it really, really funny that the kid from Home Alone is in it and he's playing like a crackhead vampire. Yeah.

[00:42:44] I just can't. I don't know. I don't like it. I'm trying to get through it just to see what happens. But I've rewatched like Freak Show, Asylum. I haven't rewatched Murder House just because I've rewatched that so many times. Coven, Apocalypse. I haven't rewatched Hotel

[00:43:01] because I've rewatched that a lot. Because Lady Gaga, you know what I mean? So I mean... Yeah. Besides that, I've just kind of run out of things to watch, basically. Yeah. But I mean, SVU is like, I've never really been a Law & Order fan. Like,

[00:43:16] I love detective and crime shows, but that's just one I've never really been drawn to. But this one, like it's not breaking barriers. But for what it is, pretty creative, pretty... Well, and every episode starts out like, oh, like, I think I know what's going to happen.

[00:43:30] And then there's a twist. Yeah. But you know, good. I really like Christopher Meloni, who's a good old detective stabler. Oh, also, I've been watching The Morning Show. Oh, yeah. That's what you watch. Yeah. And Reese Witherspoon. Reese Witherspoon is playing... I'm not sure if her character's bi

[00:43:51] or lesbian, but I've never seen Reese Witherspoon play an LGBTQ plus character. And she's actually doing it justice. So it's pretty good. I'm on season three. I watched season one and two in like, two days. Because I was sick and couldn't do anything else.

[00:44:13] Yeah. But yeah, I mean, SVU, like it's, you know, it follows a formula, but it's pretty entertaining. Good performances. Got some intrigue, got some shocking moments. I love Ice-T. Ice-T. His character, not him. Yeah. The actress who plays Detective Benson, she's very good.

[00:44:36] Yeah. And she has like, that actress has a doppelganger. If you've ever watched Pretty Little Liars, you'll know what I mean. But there's the Spencer's mom and the actress who plays Detective Benson look exactly like. Do you want to see what I mean?

[00:44:55] Sure. So yeah, good show. I mean, well, I guess we'll keep watching it until we get bored of it. Good content if you need something to watch. And if you like crime shows,

[00:45:04] it is surprisingly good. I was even, you know, kind of surprised how much I was getting into it. And I am kind of hooked. Now we might, I might even pop one in after we stop recording. I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty similar. Yeah.

[00:45:18] They could be sisters and they're not. I don't know how. Yeah. But I think that's about it. So there are some new movies out that I want to go see, but I don't know when I'm going to be able to go see them.

[00:45:29] Are we going to like, do you want to discuss the strike? I mean, to be honest, recently, I haven't been really keeping up with it. But maybe we can read it because I mean, I followed it a lot when it was more in the news.

[00:45:43] And then when it kind of faded away, I just, I just kind of... Well, there's been drama with Rachel Zell. Oh, the Snow White girl. Yeah. Yeah. So with her, I don't know her. I don't know her.

[00:46:01] But she like posted like, oh, they gave me permission to promote my movie. And people are like, well, are you with the strike or not? And there's rumors that she has a terrible attitude too. But again, that's rumors. We don't know her.

[00:46:19] So now there's plenty of worse people out there in Hollywood. So I'm not going to rag on her too much. The only thing I'll say, this girl is like 19, 20 years old. Her first role was the lead role in a Steven Spielberg West Side Story remake.

[00:46:34] And then she blew up. Yeah, like that's your first... She was like 17 when that came out. And then she's been in Hunger Games or is going to be in Hunger Games, Shazam, Snow White. And there was some... Which the Snow White movie looks horrible. That picture they released.

[00:46:53] Oh, my God. Yeah. And there was some clip of her at the strike saying, oh, we need to be paid equal as much as like men, which I mean, obviously, I completely agree with. I have no argument with that. But with how she was saying it was basically

[00:47:06] like, she's this like 20 year old girl who's already been in some of the biggest franchises of all time and worked with Steven Spielberg. And it's like, you're not the best person to

[00:47:16] really be the spokesperson for this issue. In my opinion. Maybe I'm going to get canceled for that. But the way that it was portrayed and what else I've heard about her is for her, what she's already been able to do. It's a little much. I like that.

[00:47:32] No, I mean, I get what you mean. I think a person that's been in the business for way longer should have been talking about it. I feel like that would have had more effect.

[00:47:46] Now Drew Barrymore is back doing her show. She said she wasn't going to do it. And then she did it. I don't know what changed. But she was getting canceled and she posted an

[00:47:59] apology video. And then I feel like a month later, she started doing the show again. Yeah, so she's got she's done a little bit of hot water. Which Drew Barrymore has never really had any like, drama. So it's about time.

[00:48:14] But I don't know if she's one of those people who acts really sweet because she does. On her show, she acts really sweet to her guests. But then I don't know if she's one of those people who just acts sweet and it's just kind of disgusting.

[00:48:29] I don't know. But we'll never know. But yeah, that just didn't sit well with me. And didn't make any sense. Yeah. Yes. I mean, I'm not I haven't again, I'm not I've kind of lost. I'm not keeping up with it. Like, yeah, I'm just

[00:48:47] it's still very important, obviously. But I just we've had a lot of big things going on. So I just haven't really been keeping up with it. But I hope that all the people who are very well deserving of

[00:48:57] their better pay or you know, all those other things get what they get what they want, because they they do deserve it. And I want Hollywood to continue. Yeah. Otherwise, I guess we're done. No more film butts. So right. So you know, if anything else big happens, we'll,

[00:49:14] we'll keep you updated as best we we can. Yeah, maybe we should do like bi weekly reviews of strike. Buddy News. Buddy News. Yeah. Yeah, well, well, I think I think that is about it. What are we doing next time? I forget.

[00:49:32] So next episode will be no hard feelings and Silver Linings playbook. So jail all week. Yeah, which is completely different from a tribute episode. Just FYI. Also, huge difference. Rest in peace. Matthew Perry.

[00:49:51] Oh, yeah, we that should we should a little bit that oops. But that was pretty, as it was for everyone. Pretty shocking. I guess I sat like naked in my towel kind of shocked because I

[00:50:05] came out of the shower. And I came out of the shower and I checked my phone and I was just like, what? Yeah, because I mean, I like you're a huge friends for fan. I've only seen it's not

[00:50:17] like one of my favorite sitcoms. But obviously, I'm very familiar with it. And I think Matthew Perry was in what I've seen of the show, one of my favorite parts, if not my my favorite.

[00:50:26] And I've seen him in I loved it's a small role by loved his cameo in scrubs was I even I haven't seen it probably since I was in high school. And I still remember that episode. And so yeah,

[00:50:37] he definitely will be missed. He had a pretty despite all the success had obviously had a lot of personal problems. And so yeah, it is really a shame and but despite those problems, he I feel

[00:50:50] like he's a little bit of an inspiration for people who are struggling with drug addiction and alcoholism and depression. Yeah. So I mean, every time I was really depressed in like high school, and just honestly, maybe it's like past year, just rewatching an episode of friends.

[00:51:10] And hearing those Chandler one liners just made me feel better. Yeah. So I mean, he definitely will. He definitely left a big legacy behind them. So he won't be easily forgotten. My aunt even texted me today saying she's been really sad and devastated over

[00:51:29] this because she watches friends every day. Yeah, which I mean, yeah. So definitely was a shame. So his last Instagram post is a little dark. Yeah. So his if you guys don't know he died in his home

[00:51:45] of cardiac arrest. He was in his jacuzzi. And he called 911 and they just didn't get there in time. And he ended up drowning because the cardiac arrest he was in the jacuzzi. The last picture

[00:52:01] he posted on Instagram was him in his jacuzzi drinking some beverage. Yeah. So definitely Yeah, a little dark. Well, dark. Yeah. I don't think the actress who played Phoebe is rumored to adopt his dog. Anyway, guess. depressing ending of Yeah. But hey, we got some exciting episodes for

[00:52:31] you guys in the coming weeks. Stay with us and thank you so much for being patient with us while I've been dealing with health issues. Yeah, and definitely make sure to subscribe to the show if you haven't already rate tell your friends scream it from the rooftops.

[00:52:51] That's what you say every episode. And I mean, every time I'm getting the consumption. So yeah, stay tuned for upcoming episodes all that good stuff. We hope you enjoy it even a fraction as much that doesn't make sense. Hope you enjoyed it. See you next time.

[00:53:14] See you next time.
