[00:00:00] Hello everybody, welcome back to the Film Buds podcast. This is episode number 270. Whoa, I never thought we'd get there. And my name is Henry. I'm Elle. This week we have a pretty good show. We have a review of Barbie, the new blockbuster hit. And then also a review

[00:00:33] of kind of a, I guess, reboot or kind of sequel kind of thing. I don't know exactly what you want to call it, but Zoey 102, which is a sequel film to the original Nickelodeon show

[00:00:46] Zoey 101, which is now on Paramount, I believe. And so yeah, we're going to be doing that as a fun little kind of look back, nostalgia kind of trip. Yeah. And then we have probably some news and then we have some letterboxed user reviews of

[00:01:03] things that we enjoyed reading and then other stuff we watched, so all the usual stuff. So thanks again for joining us. How are you? Doing all right. How about you? Not too bad. Well, what's been going on? Oh, well, I mean...

[00:01:17] Like I have no idea. We live together, but I have no idea what's been going on. Well, one of our dogs had a seizure the other night. Poor, sweet, innocent Wally. Not a Caesar salad, but seizure.

[00:01:30] Yeah. Clarification there. But yeah, so that was pretty scary. It happened a couple nights ago, but he seems to be doing fine now, thankfully. But it was a scary night for sure. Well, $500 later in vet bills. Do you want to share the kind of morbid little story

[00:01:48] about the emergency vet at 3 a.m.? Yeah. So it was probably about five o'clock in the morning. We had been there a couple hours and still waiting to hear on blood results, that kind of thing. And at a certain point,

[00:02:04] there are these two rooms next to us, which were these waiting rooms or the patient rooms, I guess you can call them. And at one point, one of the receptionists said, hey, would you please follow me? And so we got up and we followed her into this

[00:02:18] more secluded kind of backdoor room. We're like, this is kind of odd. And the room itself had this really nice couch, a TV, plants, very calming plants. And then there was a sign saying respectfully, something something, your pet is crossing the rainbow bridge. Yeah.

[00:02:40] And I looked at Henry and I was like, oh, oh, oh no. Oh, fuck. And then there was a sign on the door and I took a look. It was flipped over, but I still took a look and it said, please be quiet.

[00:02:54] People are saying goodbye to their pet. And I'm like, oh no. So I grabbed little Wally. He's a chihuahua by the way. Grabbed little Wally. And I was just hugging him. I was crying

[00:03:05] and I was saying, oh, you're going to see Josie, Shiloh, Harley, Bindi, Haley, all of our dead dogs that have crossed the rainbow bridge. And then Henry went and asked like, hey, we're getting really nervous waiting in this room. And then what did she say?

[00:03:27] Bless her heart. She said, oh, we just put you back there because the other rooms are being used and we're cleaning them. I said, lady, you've done it. And so I was like, okay, well,

[00:03:41] you might want to give us a little warning in advance before you take us into the death room. Right. Right. Because we had still been waiting on results. Our dog had just had a seizure. So we didn't

[00:03:52] know what was going on necessarily. It could have been the worst news, but thankfully it wasn't. He seems to be doing fine now. Yeah, thankfully. It was just really scary because we woke up to this really bad,

[00:04:06] like dry heaving noise. And so I turned on the light and Wally was unresponsive, seizing out. And yeah, he was just not responsive. I kind of immediately knew that it was a seizure. Yeah. So yeah, that was the big part of the week for sure. But things have-

[00:04:29] What a downer to start this episode out. But good news is he's again, he seems to be doing like his old wacky self. So yeah, that's the main thing. I guess one thing. So if you are already subscribed and all that to

[00:04:44] the show, which hope you are, you'll see it. I've been releasing a couple kind of little mini solo bonus shows on the feed, which is also on the filmbuds.bandcamp.com, which is our bonus show

[00:04:56] page. But just to get a little bit more exposure, I've been releasing them on the main feed. And it's just been me and then Elle also has some ideas to just do some on her own like shows she's

[00:05:07] been watching that kind of thing. And so that'll be, even though I always love to do really long in-depth shows like that on franchises or whatever, these days we don't always have the time. So

[00:05:17] sometimes a little short solo session does the job and at least will help us catch up and fill in some of the gaps that we've had over the years with certain movies we've missed or things like that.

[00:05:27] So keep an eye out for that. Go to the Bandcamp page and you can just buy them for a $1 donation. So do that. And thanks to the people over in time who have. So yeah, anything else?

[00:05:40] Well, speaking of many reviews. So Henry watches a ton of movies and as of lately, I watch a ton of TV shows. I just binge watch, binge watch, binge watch. And I've been thinking

[00:05:54] about doing a couple of mini episodes on just a whole season. And I'm thinking about doing Summer I Turn Pretty one and two after season two is done with I Wait Every Week by the Clock

[00:06:08] for the episode release and just like that, the new Sex and the City reboot. So that may be coming in the future. I have to wait till season two is over with so it might be a month or two until

[00:06:24] that comes out. But besides the many reviews, what's been going on? Just work? Just work. Worked this week. That's about it. Yeah. You? Well, I've been booking a lot of sessions because news guys, if you didn't listen to the last

[00:06:42] episode I was on, I have a photography business now. It's actually going pretty well. Yeah. I'd say. So hey, if you're in the Albuquerque area or just hey, in New Mexico, there's a small travel fee outside of Albuquerque but nothing too crazy. Hire me as a photographer.

[00:07:03] You can meet me. Whoa. That'd be so crazy if a listener. Well, you never know. Hired me. That'd be awesome. If there's anyone in New Mexico just in general, let us know besides people who we already know.

[00:07:15] My website link will be in the show notes. So if you do want to book a session with me, go to the show notes. Yeah. Contact me. Please. Let's do this thing. Let's get together. Well, should we? We got a lot to dish about, should we?

[00:07:32] Oh, yeah. Well, other than that, what's going on? Oh, and we're trying to eat healthier. Gross. I don't know. I haven't had the best year health wise and I've gained some weight. Well. Hey, the veggie pasta was good this week. I have to say it was a success.

[00:07:52] Yeah. Anyway, let's jump into the Barbie world. Yeah. Let's become Barbie and Ken because every woman and man in that movie is Barbie and Ken. So here's the clip. But next time you hear us, we will be Barbie and Ken. Whoa.

[00:08:12] Oh, looks like this beach was a little too much beach for you, Ken. If I wasn't severely injured, I would beat you off right now, Ken. I'll beat you off with you any day, Ken. Hold my ice cream, Ken. All right, Ken, you're on. Let's beat you off.

[00:08:25] Anyone who wants to beat him off has to beat me off first. I will beat both of you off at the same time. But you don't even know how to beat yourself off. How are you going to beat yourself off? It doesn't make sense.

[00:08:34] Ken, why are you getting a muffle? I'm going to beat both of us off. Nobody's going to beat anyone off. So, Barbie is in theaters now, probably will be for the next 10 years, considering how much money it's making. It's almost at a billion. That's awesome.

[00:08:48] And it's directed by Greta Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey. Who are some of the big people? Is it? Dua Lipa. Yeah. Simon Wu. Sorry, but I butchered that. John Cena is in it.

[00:09:09] And like three people from the Netflix series Sex Education. So, three of the main actors are in there. And the synopsis is, Barbie suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence. Whoa, that's a little dark.

[00:09:30] Well, I am looking on my notes and I just spit my gum out before the show. So, my gum is... I'm holding a piece of paper with my notes with a piece of gum smeared on it. So, you know, I'm just so classy.

[00:09:47] But do you want to go first or do you want me to go first? I can go. All right. Why not? Jump in. Well, when I heard about the movie, I wasn't immediately like, oh, finally. But I heard that, you know, Greta Gerwig... Wait, hold on. What's up?

[00:10:01] You've had that on your watch list forever. Well, I mean, when I heard who was in it, I saw how it looked. Yeah, just because of Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. Well, it's not the worst reason. But... Okay, go ahead.

[00:10:13] So, when I first heard about it, I was like, okay, interesting. I mean, not the worst idea. But then when I heard Greta Gerwig was going to direct, you know, I loved her as an actor and also as a director. I love Lady Bird.

[00:10:25] Then when I heard Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie were going to be the leads, they're two of my favorite actors. And so I was like, okay, great. And then when I saw the trailer, I thought it looked amazing. I thought visually it looked great.

[00:10:35] And so, again, if you'd told me a year or two ago, I would have loved or I would have been excited to see a Barbie movie, I would have said, you're nuts. But so I went in pretty excited. I heard very good things.

[00:10:47] And I gotta say, I'm trying to think of like a catchphrase that I went, you know, I don't know. But I loved it. It's by far my favorite. I haven't seen Oppenheimer yet. I've not done Barbenheimer just yet. It's definitely my favorite movie of the year so far.

[00:11:04] I thought it was like so fun and charming and very inventive, very creative. It looked incredible with all of the sets and the design of all that. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were like perfect, I think, as those characters as well as a supporting cast.

[00:11:18] Oh, and Will Ferrell was in it. I didn't mention Will Ferrell. He was in it. Yeah. So some pretty big names for sure. Yeah. The ideas in it were very... Were really well done.

[00:11:27] I think people are just kind of complaining about like, it's like too heavy handed or it's like it's too... Hashtag woke. Yeah, which is just so ridiculous. And it's just, I think it presented the ideas in a very realistic grounded way. Yeah, so I thought it was fantastic.

[00:11:45] Music was great. You know, the set, the dance numbers were awesome. You know, yeah, I really loved... Really have almost no complaints. What do you think? Overall, I thought it was a pretty fun watch. I like the dark humor in it.

[00:11:59] That scene where Barbie was just dancing and said, do you ever guess... Do you guys ever think about death? And, you know, it's kind of funny. So there's moments like that in the movie. Attention to detail.

[00:12:14] I loved when Barbie floated to her car because Barbies don't walk to their car. Right. They're just put in their car. I love that. Also, all the Barbies not having flat feet and curved hands like real Barbies. I just love the attention to detail.

[00:12:34] And apparently, allegedly, there is this guy. He had this job of making sure the actor's hands were curved. What a job. I know he got paid to just walk around and make sure every hand was like curved. So attention to detail was awesome. The set design, amazing.

[00:12:57] Looked like my Barbie dream house from when I was little. And fun fact about the set and the use of pink. The world is now in a pink shortage. Yeah, or at least was at the time.

[00:13:10] I don't know how long that went on, but it was there was a worldwide shortage of pink paint. Yeah, which is awesome. I feel like you're gonna not like what I have to say with this, but the acting, I thought it was pretty average.

[00:13:25] I didn't think it was the best acting I've seen from Margot and Ryan, but overall a good and funny performance. Ryan Gosling's I'm Just Ken was amazing. It's stuck in my head. I keep singing it. It's classic. Can you confirm that? I keep singing it. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

[00:13:45] But apparently, it's in the 100 top songs or something. It's on the charts now. So I hope Ryan Gosling is getting that coin. I'm sure he is. Doesn't need it. I thought the patriarchy bit was pretty, pretty funny. Cringy, but funny.

[00:14:03] And that's what I guess the more conservative people are upset about. But I don't know. I enjoyed having a movie just making fun of the patriarchy. Yeah. I thought it was hilarious. Yeah. And then America, Fira's speech in the movie about women.

[00:14:25] I as a woman, I really like the speech. I could relate a lot. Part of her speech is like, you're supposed to be thin, but not too thin and felt that and a bunch of other stuff.

[00:14:41] So, you know, I wish I had the speech like in my hand to read it. But I thought her performance was pretty good. The speech was iconic. I feel like a lot of women could relate in the theater.

[00:14:58] And I guess that was the target audience anyway, in theater nerds. Yeah. Other than that, I don't have a lot. No complaints really. I thought it was pretty funny and overall a good watch. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:15:16] I guess I've seen one of the criticisms by the, let's say, the people who are trying to criticize the movie. Like they're trying to say it's trying to promote men or it not being okay for a man to be masculine.

[00:15:30] Like it's trying to, you know, that kind of thing, which is just so stupid and which I don't think that's the case at all. I think it's just promoting a more open view of men and masculinity. And it's literally Barbies, y'all. It's Barbies. Come on. Yeah.

[00:15:45] And so I think all that stuff is pretty stupid. I think the way it writes, especially in that kind of speech, even just as a man hearing it, like I could definitely like that seemed to be pretty real and felt like it really came

[00:15:59] from a place of experience. And so this is definitely... I mean, I know you're saying you don't really love the performances. I think Margot Robbie's... I don't think she's ever given a bad performance. Well, no. I'm saying that because like it's a fun watch. The acting was good.

[00:16:20] But is it like Oscar worthy acting? No. Is it fun acting? Yes. Yeah. I mean, I wouldn't say... I don't know if... Like overall, the performance was good. I'm not saying any like... I'm not saying they sucked or whatever.

[00:16:34] I'm just saying it wasn't like Harley Quinn level for a performance in that. That's fair. I think yeah. I think Harley Quinn is still my favorite of hers and Place Beyond the Pines is still my favorite gosling. This is definitely one of his more iconic ones for sure.

[00:16:50] And I do... I think Margot Robbie is very good in it. And so... But overall, yeah. I was... I didn't really leave disappointed. I left even probably enjoying it more than I thought I would. Same here. And I'm really looking forward to rewatching it.

[00:17:06] And I think it's something that's a very easy watch too. You can just kind of put on. It's very rewatchable. Yeah, that's what I liked about it too. Yeah. And so I... And soundtrack was good. Yeah. So it was... I think it really lives up to the hype.

[00:17:19] And I really... I think one of the reasons that the movie is working is because not only has a good crew, but it's like... It's not... It is based off a toy product, but it's not like a reboot of something. It's not a remake of something.

[00:17:33] It is, I guess, quote unquote... A standalone. Original. And so I think that's why this one and Oppenheimer are doing so well is because finally, we've had good movies come out that are not attached to some big... And I'm sorry, but not a Disney live action remake. Yeah.

[00:17:51] So I think that... And again, I need to see Oppenheimer still, but that's one of the reasons why I think both are doing so well right now. But yeah, so big fan. Big fan. Also the marketing on this. Yeah, marketing was crazy. They did pretty great.

[00:18:07] Like to have everyone go to the theater dressed in pink. Yeah, so pretty... They clearly did the right thing and their movie is gonna... I'm sure gonna continue to do really, really well. And in the UK at Burger King, there's like a pink burger,

[00:18:23] which looks like something from SpongeBob. But anyway. Yeah. But they did pretty well in marketing. Now, apparently, there's gonna be a sequel. See, I kind of... Unless it's the same people, the same kind of work put in, I would honestly rather just be standalone.

[00:18:46] If it's the same group, same director, same cast, and they can do just as good a job within the same context, then hey, do it. But honestly, if not, I'd rather just have the one. That's fair. Leave on a high note. Well, apparently...

[00:18:59] I don't know if this is a rumor or a fact. So take it with a grain of salt. But I saw on Facebook somewhere that Mattel is gonna be coming out with a Mattel universe. Oh no, no, no. That's... Yeah, it's in the works. Like Polly Pocket, Barney.

[00:19:20] Hot Wheels. Hot Wheels. I'm excited for Hot Wheels. Hot Wheels, beat that. But apparently that's happening. Yeah. So we'll see. I mean, again... Which Polly Pocket will be interesting. Yeah. Because oh my... Can you imagine just having the little world in someone's pocket

[00:19:39] and carrying it around and they're all like, whoa! Because the walking or... I don't know. Yeah. So I mean, again, it all comes down to execution. People say, oh, I can't believe they're making a movie off of this toy or off of this game.

[00:19:51] And really, all it comes down to is who's involved. Like people will adapt a story that has an incredible in-depth complex story and they do a terrible job. And then whereas this, for example, has no story, literally no story. They did... Made it fantastic. So all right.

[00:20:08] So what did you rate it? I gave it a five. Big old five. Five. Yeah. I gave it a four out of five. Okay. So letterboxd review time. This review is by Zoe, ironically. Get it? Ironically? Oh, okay. We're about to review. So we wanted to... Okay.

[00:20:28] So Zoe says, and this is a long one. So buckle in. We all knew Barbie was going to be funny. We all knew it'd have something to say about the female coming of age as if all of Greta Gerwig's movies have thus far.

[00:20:43] And we all knew Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling would turn in no perfect performances as Barbie and Ken. And they did. What I didn't know was how much Barbie would mean, not truly, not fully, how much it would mean to me,

[00:20:58] to the woman sitting to my left and right, to all of us. The depth and breadth of its central message was something I couldn't have ever anticipated. Despite having the utmost faith in Greta Gerwig at every twist and turn.

[00:21:11] And even though I'd been looking forward to this film for years, five, in fact, it hit me right when I needed it most. A movie about growing up and realizing womanhood is an all pink pleasure and possibility. Realizing that much of the world will hate you always,

[00:21:29] no matter what you do, simply because of who you are. Realizing that there comes a point when you either have to accept complacency within the patriarchy or ostracization, God, and vilification outside of it. Or maybe there's another way.

[00:21:48] Maybe womanhood isn't all the fun and freedom we dreamed up in our youth, but maybe we don't have to abandon it entirely either. Maybe, just maybe, once we accept begrudgingly embrace the often brutal reality of our everyday existence while still retaining our inner strength at the same time,

[00:22:07] we can better reconcile all these cultural complications and contradictions and find a way to move through the world cautiously, but authentically, reveling in our and the world's flaws instead of willfully overlooking them in favor of the fantasy at long last.

[00:22:26] I learned these lessons a little late because I started living as a woman a little late. In fact, I still have some learning to do, and sometimes that scares me. But movies like this, art like this, make that education just a little bit easier. So thank you, Barbie.

[00:22:41] You're everything and so am I. Whoa. So Zoe rated it five stars, and this review has 28,065 likes. Nicely done. All right. So the other one we have is from Nathan Spencer. Gave it a four and a heart.

[00:23:02] He said, no actor in the history of film has understood their assignment more than Ryan Gosling does as him. I can't argue with you. Hi. You know, well said. I don't disagree. So yeah. Well, there's some good reviews.

[00:23:18] And again, we are both on Letterboxd and we'll put those, the links, usernames in the show notes. Henry now has a thousand followers. I have over a thousand followers. Whoa. So yeah. I wonder how that happened. I don't know. I'm just so popular. All right.

[00:23:32] Well, let's get to Zoe 102. Let's jump back to the past. All right. Let's go to PCA. All right. Well, we do have a clip. So take a listen. All right, people, let's get to work. Whatever your plans are, cancel them. It'll be the reunion we all need.

[00:23:53] Yeah, PCA, baby. I need you to play my boyfriend at my best friend's wedding. Like Method. You are leaving with the car? Everyone says high school love doesn't last. Did you really think we were going to stroll off into the sunset? All right.

[00:24:15] So Zoe 102 is on Paramount now. It's directed by Nancy Hauer, stars Jamie Lynn Spears, Sean Flynn, Aaron Sanders, Christopher Massey, Matthew Underwood, Abby Wilde, Dean Guyer, Owen Thiel, Jack Salvatore Jr, Zach Zagoria. And the synopsis is follows Zoe Brooks and the rest of the Pacific Coast Academy alumni

[00:24:42] as they catch up for a wedding in the present day. So this one, you know, we I think when we first started doing the show together a couple months ago, we were on a Nickelodeon kick like iCarly, Zoe 101, Drake and Josh, that kind of thing.

[00:24:57] And so I guess it's, you know, kind of perfect timing. So we both are fans of the show. I mean, Zoe 101 isn't my favorite, but it's definitely one that I still have a lot of nostalgic love for.

[00:25:06] And rewatching is still very fun, you know, very fun and enjoyable and takes you back. And this one was, I think the movie itself was a bit of a surprise. I was like, oh, shoot. Well, cool. You know, they're doing that.

[00:25:19] And it just happened to be, you know, being released around this time. So we thought, hey, perfect. Let's throw it in. So you want to kick it off this time? Sure. Overall, a really fun throwback watch.

[00:25:35] But oh my God, Zoe, Zoe is just gave me a headache the entire time. She was a total bitch to chase, by the way, because spoiler alert. The finale, Zoe was supposed to go to Hawaii with Chase. And guess what happened? Guess what this bitch does?

[00:25:59] Because the world revolves around her. I'm so sorry, but the world does in this universe. And she abandoned Chase at Hawaii. Yeah. On an island. I mean, that's not the worst place to be abandoned, but still.

[00:26:15] But then she like there was a scene where she was like, why is Chase so mad at me? He won't answer. Yeah, you abandoned him. That's fair. All the way in Hawaii, which, again, isn't the worst place to be abandoned.

[00:26:29] OK, but just like no wonder he won't respond to your text messages. No wonder. Yeah. And if you have no con, if you're just listening to this review casually, sorry if you don't have the backstory. But yeah, sorry.

[00:26:44] It was interesting to see how all the characters changed and developed over the years. Quinn has had a glow up. She didn't look like she aged a day. While Jamie Lynn Spears, sorry, looks pretty bad. Not pretty bad. I wouldn't say bad, but she looks more. Her age.

[00:27:05] You know, age has caught up with her. Yes. I'll say. Not pretty bad. Sorry. You can cut that out. But yeah, Quinn looked amazing. It was a little weird that Logan was such a groomzilla. It's kind of weird. I mean, I think it kind of makes sense.

[00:27:19] That also fits his personality. I think it kind of fit the character. He kind of looks like James Franco, honestly. He really does. And that's Matthew Underwood, who plays Logan. But the movie, I feel like overall gave the feeling of a classic Zoey 101 episode.

[00:27:37] But you know, with cussing and drinking and grown up stuff involved. Again, you know, the world does revolve around Zoey. And that's something that spugged me even with the show. And then every episode of Zoey 101, it just magically like turns out okay in the end. Yeah.

[00:27:58] It's like magically, like everyone's happy. Everyone's great. And it happened like this, even though Zoey was working during Quinn and Logan's wedding. Which was a shit move. Yeah. Michael didn't have like little to no lines, which was very disappointing, because he's a pretty funny character. Yeah.

[00:28:21] I thought it was funny that he came out with a song called Drippin. Remember that episode? Yeah. He was trying to incorporate Drippin. Yeah. And Stacey Dilson still does not have a lisp. And she's still or she's doing a murder podcast. Called Slaughter. Something. Slaughter something.

[00:28:45] But it didn't really make sense for her and Mark to be together. But when you think about it, Mark is the one who hit her. And then she didn't have a lisp anymore in the Zoey 101 finale. So that's a little. But man, Mark is whipped. Yeah. Well said.

[00:29:05] Thank you. Yeah. Things I've learned from watching Zoey 102, though, never asked Zoey to be a bridesmaid or maid of honor. Or anything. Just keep her out of it. Also, the dark ending was pretty random. It was. But we can discuss that after you. Yeah.

[00:29:23] Well, so when it comes to these like reboot, like sequel shows, wherever you want to call them, reunions, I really am just not a fan typically. It just feels like kind of a cash grab.

[00:29:36] Most of the time it feels like the actors are doing impressions of their past performances, so it doesn't really feel authentic. And so I was like, is this going to be actually any good? And actually, I thought it was about the same level as you.

[00:29:48] It was pretty fun. Went along pretty briskly. And I really enjoyed being back with the characters who were there. I thought they did a good job of seeing how they would be in 10, however long, many years it was. So I thought that was very good.

[00:30:01] I thought it was well directed, well written, looked good, good soundtrack. And so very sappy at times, that kind of thing. But it's played into the show, I thought. And so it was quite fun, much more than I thought. And it's not really one that I would like.

[00:30:17] This is movies. Amazing. It is very much like a TV movie kind of feel to it. But for what it is, pretty decent. And I think fans of the show will be happy with it for the most part. I think the actor who plays her...

[00:30:33] Or like the actor within the context of the movie plays Zoe's boyfriend. I thought he was really fun and enjoyable. And then the weird dark ending is... It is very strange. I'm guessing that they're going to do a sequel, maybe. That's very random too. Yeah.

[00:30:46] They easily could have just cut that and it would have not lost anything. But I guess that means that they are going to do a sequel because otherwise it would have even less... Make even less sense for being in there. So...

[00:30:57] I don't know why that dude that played Zoe's boyfriend always plays kind of a dude. Got typecast, I guess. I mean, he played a douche in Glee. Yeah. So... But yeah. And I thought all the performances for the original cast were... They were good.

[00:31:15] I felt like they just went back into those characters really easily. And it was really fun catching up with them, so to speak. And I wouldn't be against a sequel to the movie.

[00:31:25] Or if they were able to do something at this level for some of the other shows. Like I think... Like I know I haven't seen it, but you saw some of the iCarly new show which was bad from what you've said.

[00:31:36] And so I think that this one is like a good example of you can do it. You don't have to do it. This is... I didn't need this movie, but... Well, they can't do Drake and Josh because Drake Bell's in jail now. I think he wasn't.

[00:31:46] Can't hear that he was arrested. Just now? Oh no. Oh. Yep. Anyways, it's a shame. So it was... It's not a movie. If you're not a fan of the show, I don't think you need to seek this one out.

[00:31:59] But if you are, do like the classic Nickelodeon shows. And if you do like Zoey 101 or Nick shows, hey, check it out. There's worse ways to spend an hour and a half. Now, were you disappointed that Victoria Justice wasn't in it? Yeah.

[00:32:12] And I'm hoping if they do a sequel, she'll be back in it. I feel like they could have waited a little bit for her to be... Yeah, because it was... She wasn't in there... In there. She wasn't in the movie because of scheduling conflicts. Yeah.

[00:32:27] So that was a little disappointing, but overall not... Because it didn't make sense. Yeah. I mean, I thought she would have been a bridesmaid or something, but... Yeah. But yeah, Zoey, I don't love her character either. She is kind of obnoxious and whiny. Whereas someone like...

[00:32:44] I feel like the show could be like Aaron 101. It'd be much more fun. You know? Yeah. Logan's... Or no, what's your name? That's the actress, Quinn 101. Quinn. Quinn 101. Sorry about that brain fart. And I think that would be a...

[00:33:00] Honestly, it would be a better show and Zoey could just be someone who pops up here and there. Because there was a scene that I laughed at. Zoey is writing on the board like, okay, I need a boyfriend, I need a car and I need a plan.

[00:33:13] Okay, isn't the plan to get a boyfriend and car and then you're just putting a plan? Like you're making a plan to make a plan. Yeah, poor thing. Like you were writing on the board to make a plan. Why are you writing on the... What? I don't know.

[00:33:29] But yeah, pleasantly surprised. Not gonna be a best of the year kind of thing, but still a fun time. So anything else about old Zoey? Not really. Just watch out, Chase. She might abandon you again on an island. That's in Zoey 103, you know.

[00:33:51] Well, all right, what are you gonna give it out of five? Three out of five. Same for me. Oh, nice. Yeah. The average rating was actually 2.2. Sorry, Zo. All right, letterbox review time. I'm trying to come up with a song, something.

[00:34:10] All right, Charlie Mack rated it two stars and said, Quinn Logan Michael carried. Zoey is literally awful. I'm glad the writers picked up on her peaked in high school energy. She always gave off. Whatever this sucked or sorry, Charlie, you need to learn how to punctuate.

[00:34:32] Whatever this sucked. I do not like Jamie Lynn Curtis. A Dan Schneider credit in 2023 is so bad. Also, where are Stacey's cotton swabs? I can excuse the list because I get that it got cured in the finale. I knew this would suck.

[00:34:49] I just did it for Quinn and Logan. Also, Jewish Quinn Pinsky. I won. Harsh words. All right, here you go. All right, so this one comes from Ludovic Bagman. Three and a half out of five says not needed at all, but good enough.

[00:35:07] Best part is they decided to do a movie instead of a show. I agree. Worst part is they failed to get the two biggest stars, Victoria Justice and Austin Butler. I'll see now that would have been fun considering like he just been Elvis.

[00:35:19] That would be a fun little cameo. And that would have brought in a lot of viewers too. So that's a point in your favor, Ludovic. Pretty good. Victoria Justice and Austin Butler to make in parents. So well said. Maybe they'll be in Zoey 103. Yeah.

[00:35:36] And last one from JMONTG03. I rate it two and a half stars. Honestly, I just wish there was a lot more of all the friends just hanging out. There was a lot in all capital letters of Zoey and her chaos. And honestly, just stressed me out.

[00:35:59] I wanted this to be a fun, comfort movie. In the scene with Todd at the very end was so dot dot dot. Random? Who is in the truck? That's a good question. I don't know.

[00:36:11] So thanks for, you know, hope if you know those were one of your reviews. Hope you hope you like that. And yeah, if you have any reviews that you want us to read, feel free to send us them on the film buds podcast at gmail.com.

[00:36:22] And also that's where you can send us just questions to read on the show as we've done in the past. So please send us any questions, comments, suggestions, criticisms, anything you'd like to let us know. Criticisms like send us hate comments. Well, whatever, you know? And yeah.

[00:36:37] So I mean, really not much news. I mean, we talked about the whole Mattel cinematic universe stupid thing. But so I mean, honestly, that's there. No, I'm just gonna be counting down the days for Barney. Yeah, that'd be interesting, actually. But yes, not much news.

[00:36:55] And then, yeah, again, you know, send us questions also on social media at film buds and make sure to follow us there if you have not already. Or you could even leave a question in a letterbox comment, you know, on one of our profiles.

[00:37:09] So feel free to do that. So should we send off with stuff we watched? Sure, you can go first. Okay. So I mean, it's been a minute. So I do have a fair bit of things, but I'll just try and pick some of the newer movies.

[00:37:22] So I have seen some. I've caught up a little bit this year. Watched Transformers Rise of the Beasts, which is the newest sequel, reboot, whatever movie in the Transformers universe. And honestly, I thought it was terrible.

[00:37:37] I thought it was, I think it's the worst of the entire franchise. I, you know, say what you will about the Michael Bay ones, but at least they're so bombastic, so crazy, so Michael Bay that they're, I can forgive them more for some of their

[00:37:49] flaws because they are just so wild. Whereas this one is just trying to be too normal. It's just so bland. It's not creative. It's the performances are bad. The writing is bland. I know some people have liked it, but overall I thought it was awful.

[00:38:06] So yeah, unfortunately, hate to say it, but that's the case. Then I saw Fast 10 or Fast X as it's officially titled, which is, you know, the 10th one, which I did not realize is the first part of a trilogy. So 10, 11, 12 will be a trilogy. This is part one.

[00:38:23] And I wish you guys could see my face. Yeah. So now the whole franchise, there's not one that I love. I've seen all of them at this point, so I might as well keep watching them. Jason Momoa, who plays the villain, I thought he was awesome.

[00:38:36] Like how his performance, the look of the character that really made the movie. It's still not that good of a movie, but I'd say probably the best villain of the whole franchise. So that was fun. Let's see.

[00:38:48] Watched The Flash, which is directed by the guy who did the two It films, Stephen King It films. And overall, I didn't hate it as much as some people did. I did like it. It just has some really bad moments, but some really cool moments.

[00:39:03] And so it's very inconsistent. Some things I'm like, this is so cool. Looks awesome. And then next moment, it's the opposite. So very kind of frustrating in that way, but still an interesting watch. Still fun. Watched Asteroid City, the new Wes Anderson film, which I love Wes Anderson.

[00:39:18] Recently, not as much. This is probably towards the bottom of his films. It just felt very, a little too dry. Not that funny. And good performances, as always. Looked very good, but just not as creative or as fun or as impactful as some of his other stuff.

[00:39:36] So not a favorite for sure. Let's see. Watched Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, which is the sequel to the one that came out a couple years ago, Into the Spider-Verse. And overall, very good. Still like the first one more. Looks amazing. Great performances, great characters, great soundtrack.

[00:39:54] Very worth watching. So check that out. And let's see. I'll try and... And then I watched Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho, which is his most recent directorial film. And I really like Clint Eastwood as an actor and a director.

[00:40:09] The last 10 years or so, his movies mostly are not that great. But still, he has a very traditional style. So I always try to watch what he does. And considering he's in his early 90s, I try not to give him too much hate.

[00:40:21] Because again, if you're in your early 90s and you're still making movies, you're probably tired and just want to go to sleep. So he's still plugging along, I'm sure. So that's pretty impressive.

[00:40:32] Not an amazing movie, but still cool to see an actor in his early 90s leading a movie and directing. That might be about it for fairly new stuff. I have other stuff. I might save that for another time. What about you?

[00:40:45] So for me, I have watched quite a bit. Other than Barbie and Zoey 101, I watched Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. I thought it was a pretty good watch. Rachel McAdams was really good. You Again starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Kristen Bell. Legally Blonde, classic.

[00:41:10] Starring Reese Witherspoon. Judy starring... Renee Zellweger. Yeah. Which I... Now, I thought Judy was a pretty depressing watch. But I also really enjoyed it because I didn't know about Judy Garland's life at the very end. Very interesting, very fucked up, very sad.

[00:41:36] I also rewatched one of my favorite films of all time, Silver Lanyard's Playbook. Classic. I know. Then I watched A Simple Favor. It was all right. Then I watched Sex and the City, the movie. And then Sex and the City 2. Sex and the City 1 was all right.

[00:41:58] The second one was really bad and culturally insensitive in my opinion. My humble onion. I watched Gone with Amanda Seyfried. I actually watched a Lifetime movie called Believe Me, The Abduction of Lisa McVie. It's very interesting. For a Lifetime movie is actually pretty good. Let's see.

[00:42:24] Other than that, we watched Cadet Kelly together. Oh yeah. It was pretty funny, cringy, a throwback, but good. But that's all the movies I have. Sorry. Yeah, Frog. I got a frog in my throat, guys. Yeah, that's all I've been. All the movies I've been watching.

[00:42:45] Other than that, I've been watching Big Little Lies. Let's see. Sex and the City, of course. And Just Like That, The Summer I Turned Pretty. I think that's about it. All right. Yeah. Cool. I'm sorry about the frog in my throat. All right.

[00:43:04] Well, I guess that is about it for this week, unfortunately. Always hate to bring it to a close, you know. But now next week, what are we doing? So I actually have a lineup for the whole month of August. Look at us, guys. We're being organized. We're planning.

[00:43:26] Gross. I know. So this week, obviously, Barbie and Zoey 102. Next week, we're going to be doing a Robin Williams tribute since it was recently his birthday. Then the week of August 18th, the new Guardians movie and the new Ant-Man movie.

[00:43:47] And then the last week of August, we're going to be doing Jennifer Lawrence's new movie called No Hard Feelings and Silver Linings Playbook, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. So that is the lineup we've got this month, guys. Whoa. Whoa.

[00:44:05] So yeah, keep an eye out for that. And again, the FilmBuds podcast at gmail.com is where you can reach us at. Questions, comments, whatever you have to say. Love the show, hate the show, just let us know. We like hearing from people and follow us on Letterboxd.

[00:44:34] Make sure you subscribe, rate the show, all of that good stuff. You know, tell your friends. Shout it from the rooftops, people. So well, thanks for being here as always. Thank you. Yeah. Well, we hope you enjoyed it half as much as we did really. Even half.

[00:44:50] And we'll see you next time. All right. See you guys.
