[00:00:40] Thanks.

[00:00:42] 86. Let's get to You People.

[00:00:46] Which is a Netflix original, came out in early 2023 I believe.

[00:00:51] It's directed by Kenya Barris, written by Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris.

[00:00:56] Stars Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sam Jay, Nia Long, and a few others.

[00:01:06] And the synopsis is, follows a new couple and their families who find themselves examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations, and generational differences.

[00:01:20] So I had heard about this one, I heard it got pretty bad reviews.

[00:01:26] I love Jonah Hill and I love Eddie Murphy and really everyone in this whole cast.

[00:01:30] Love Julia Louis-Dreyfus and so on and so forth.

[00:01:34] So yeah, I had heard about it and put it off to watching until just now.

[00:01:39] And I think I liked it more than a lot of people seem to, at least on Letterboxd as I feel like I'm a broken record saying that.

[00:01:47] But a lot of people trashed it hard on Letterboxd.

[00:01:51] I don't think it's anything amazing for sure.

[00:01:53] Like it is at times trying too hard to create this modern perspective on race and culture clashing and even injecting things like COVID and all that.

[00:02:05] So it doesn't hit the mark, even I'd say a lot of the time.

[00:02:09] But I did still find it to be refreshing, original at least to a certain degree.

[00:02:13] I know it's based on the or inspired by Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, which I've not seen.

[00:02:19] I have known about it for years, just never got around to watching it.

[00:02:23] So I know it's influenced by that.

[00:02:26] And I think that the writing itself, some people were really hating on the writing.

[00:02:31] It at times is a little blunt, a little obvious, clunky.

[00:02:35] But I still think that I appreciate a movie like this trying to say something.

[00:02:39] And even putting that aside, though, I found the movie to be very funny.

[00:02:45] Like I think Jonah Hill is hilarious in this.

[00:02:48] Eddie Murphy doesn't have a whole lot to do.

[00:02:50] He's more like straight faced a lot of the time.

[00:02:53] Julia Louis-Dreyfus is hilarious.

[00:02:55] Always love her.

[00:02:57] It's a little long.

[00:02:59] I don't think it needed to be.

[00:03:01] I think it's almost two hours.

[00:03:03] I don't think it needed to be that.

[00:03:05] I think all movies like this should be a maximum 90 minutes.

[00:03:07] And also I know that another criticism that I read was saying that it was over directed.

[00:03:15] Which I disagree with.

[00:03:17] There are points where it's injecting some sort of like almost music video-esque editing and things.

[00:03:23] But I really did not find it to be overbearing, like I think some people made it out to be.

[00:03:27] I thought it was fairly cleanly directed.

[00:03:30] And so really the only issue with that, going back to what I just said, was like pacing problems.

[00:03:34] But stylistically I liked it.

[00:03:36] One unexpected thing that I did like was Jonah Hill having a podcast, since I have a podcast obviously.

[00:03:43] I love that part of the story.

[00:03:45] And I think that the relationship between him and Lauren London, the ups and downs work.

[00:03:50] And I think that when they have the culture clashes of Jewish families versus Muslim families,

[00:03:57] I think that really is for the most part effective.

[00:04:00] It maybe goes a little too far with certain things.

[00:04:03] And I think there are a few recent political and societal things that they inject as,

[00:04:09] often times as jokes.

[00:04:11] And I don't think that they really need to be there.

[00:04:13] I won't go into it too much just because I don't want to put anybody off.

[00:04:16] But there are a few things I'm like, eesh, I don't know if that really needed to be.

[00:04:20] I get it's a current film, it's dealing with the actual pandemic itself.

[00:04:24] But I still don't think a few things that were essentially made out to be jokes

[00:04:28] really hit at all.

[00:04:30] And so there were some flaws for sure.

[00:04:33] It's not an amazing movie.

[00:04:35] I get if you hate the film, I guess I can get it.

[00:04:38] But I think watching it as a Netflix original, which I say this a lot,

[00:04:41] it felt like a Netflix original.

[00:04:43] I think if this had come out in theaters, nobody would have seen it.

[00:04:46] Just as I talked about with Heart of Stone last episode.

[00:04:49] So there are good elements.

[00:04:51] I always like to see Jonah Hill in something that is not a big blockbuster sort of film

[00:04:56] or Seth Rogen film.

[00:04:58] I think that's a really good feature because I think he has good range both

[00:05:01] dramatically, comedically.

[00:05:03] I think I like him most as a comedic actor.

[00:05:06] I think he just has a great delivery and I love his writing too.

[00:05:09] There's just something about it that clicks with me.

[00:05:11] So I think it's worth a watch.

[00:05:15] I think even just for the cast itself, whether you end up liking it or not,

[00:05:20] it's at least different.

[00:05:22] Not necessarily say that's an excuse or makes it perfect.

[00:05:25] But it was at least a little bit different for me.

[00:05:29] So that one is a light three out of five.
