[00:00:41] 83. Let's get to Magic Mike's Last Dance. This one is it was on Netflix recently

[00:00:50] I think it may have been taken off so you might just have to purchase it or

[00:00:54] rent it digitally. It's directed by Steven Soderbergh, written once again by

[00:00:59] Reed Carolyn who wrote the first two. Magic Mike's it stars Chang Tatum, Salma Hayek,

[00:01:05] Ayub Khan Din, not really a big cast, Daniel Yacca, Aaron Klein and a few

[00:01:12] others and the synopsis is Mike takes to the stage again following a business

[00:01:18] deal that went bust leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida.

[00:01:22] Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite who lures him with an

[00:01:26] offer he can't refuse. So we did review former host of the

[00:01:33] show Paul and I did review the first two Magic Mike's together back in think

[00:01:37] 2021 sometime so you can check those out. I got around to seeing the first

[00:01:42] one probably mid 2010s late 2010s. I had known Steven Soderbergh up to that

[00:01:50] time I loved Chang Tatum but I was like alright this is just not a movie

[00:01:54] for me not a big deal you know it's sort of a girls night out film that's

[00:01:59] what I was told you know and I was like alright well whatever it's about male

[00:02:02] strippers not really my thing so I'll just skip that one and didn't think

[00:02:07] much of it for a while but then I heard some other film reviewers talking

[00:02:11] about it just as like hey I went to see this it was great and I was like

[00:02:15] huh interesting and they're talking a lot more than just it being some

[00:02:19] hotbots dancing around it's like alright I'll give it a shot

[00:02:22] considering I like everyone involved how bad can it be and I actually thought

[00:02:27] the first one was awesome I love the first Magic Mike I think that it does

[00:02:31] and maybe that's why some people don't like it is that it really did become

[00:02:36] more of a satire for the male stripping world and it had a lot more

[00:02:40] character work going on than just being a dance movie for people to go

[00:02:44] enjoy and look at Chang Tatum shirtless you know so I think that's

[00:02:49] why maybe some people like the second one more than the first it just

[00:02:52] depends on the audience that's there which teach their own doesn't matter

[00:02:55] but I found it really really refreshing where the dance sequences

[00:02:59] are so funny they're well choreographed but they're really intentionally funny

[00:03:03] it looks good it's got interesting character work as I said like it's a

[00:03:07] very good dramedy whatever you want to call it sort of film and Steven

[00:03:12] Soderbergh having directed it makes it even better and so I'm a big fan

[00:03:17] of the first one I've seen a couple of times and I really really like it

[00:03:20] it goes up basically every time I watch it and I saw the second one I think

[00:03:26] maybe a year after it came out didn't know what to expect considering was not

[00:03:30] done by Soderbergh and I was like alright this is probably gonna be lame same sort

[00:03:35] of story with the first one and I actually liked the second one alright

[00:03:39] I don't think it's as good as the first it's not an amazing movie but

[00:03:42] it's still a really entertaining sort of dance film and has a lot of

[00:03:48] good elements despite being maybe a little bit more shallow than the first

[00:03:51] and what I think sorry long story short here I think what I really appreciate

[00:03:57] about this now trilogy which is awesome is that it is taking a fairly

[00:04:03] low-budget simple concept and creating story after story that does not just

[00:04:09] repeat the same thing from the first film it's not really a box office

[00:04:14] Buster or anything like that they're all successful but it's not like a 200

[00:04:19] million dollar movie and they're able to take new elements new ideas and

[00:04:24] inject them into each one they're able to take a good cast a good

[00:04:27] director a good writer and make kind of a adult fairly grounded trilogy and

[00:04:35] series that you would not expect at all to be concerning male strippers

[00:04:39] like you would think it's the opposite and so that's what I really

[00:04:42] appreciate about this series and so I was looking forward to this one I'd

[00:04:47] heard sort of so-so things about it but I still really wanted to see it for a

[00:04:51] variety of reasons and I think I did like it overall it is probably my

[00:04:58] least favorite I think they progressively have gone down in star

[00:05:02] rating with each installment but it really takes a lot of things and spends

[00:05:07] them on its head this one I think more so than any of them really look

[00:05:11] at the craft of artists and like for example in this they're putting on this

[00:05:16] show they're taking a traditional like Victorian story and injecting it with

[00:05:21] male strippers which I don't think that's a spoiler and it really does

[00:05:26] very seriously get into someone trying to figure out what's my vision how am

[00:05:31] I gonna put this out to the public what are people's response gonna be how

[00:05:35] do I go about choreographing this scene who do we get what works what

[00:05:39] doesn't what's dated it is not too long it's I think about two hours 145

[00:05:46] something like that it glides along fairly well like it's not really maybe

[00:05:51] for better and for worse it's not super emotional it's not super funny

[00:05:55] it's in the middle and it's surely no big news at this point but what

[00:06:02] really makes the series work is Channing Tatum because like many I

[00:06:06] thought he was just a pretty face when he started out being in you know GI Joe

[00:06:10] and things like that's like all right this guy is not that good people can

[00:06:14] enjoy him if they think he's attractive like whatever but he really

[00:06:18] has grown so much as an actor and what makes the series work is he's not

[00:06:23] only a good actor like he has good emotional range and he also has a

[00:06:28] movie star sort of quality to him that gives him a good presence he also

[00:06:32] can really freaking dance like he is a fantastic dancer and there aren't many

[00:06:38] big stars out there nowadays that can do maybe none who can do what he does in

[00:06:43] the way that he does and so he has so many elements that are very unique

[00:06:47] and he dances the hell out of all three of these movies very seriously

[00:06:52] and confidently and expertly so he's amazing in it

[00:06:56] Salma Hayek I like her like I don't seek her movies out I typically like

[00:07:01] her in general more so in comedic stuff than dramatic stuff and I think that

[00:07:06] talking about things I didn't like I think her performance is fine but

[00:07:11] maybe it's the writing maybe it's a combination of performance not sure

[00:07:14] but there's just something about her character that I was never really

[00:07:18] getting into there's just something about it that's sort of unlikable at

[00:07:22] times I appreciate her wanting to find her power her freedom her you

[00:07:27] know self-control whatever it might be her creative freedom but for a

[00:07:31] lot of the movie I just was not with her I was with Mike Magic Mike but not so

[00:07:36] much her so that brought it down a little bit I didn't care as much about

[00:07:40] their relationship I didn't totally buy it in terms of the emotional weight so

[00:07:45] that would be the weakest part of the film for me but not a huge deal

[00:07:49] breaker I still really enjoyed it I would happily watch a fourth film I

[00:07:52] don't think they're going to but there's a whole heck of a lot worse

[00:07:55] sequels out there than these movies so if you're hesitant about any of

[00:07:59] them like if you haven't seen any of them give the first one a shot I think

[00:08:02] you might be surprised if you think oh that's not for me that's what I thought

[00:08:06] and I was very very pleasantly surprised whereas it's probably now

[00:08:09] one of my favorite Soderbergh movies the first one is oh also the dance

[00:08:14] sequence at the end amazing like the performance incredible in a variety ways

[00:08:19] the sound the choreography the music it's awesome and then also the

[00:08:23] sequence at the very beginning with Cheney Tatum and Salma Hayek is pretty

[00:08:28] wild so it's worth checking out for that so that one is a heavy three out of five
