[00:00:40] Thanks.
[00:00:42] 80. Let's get to Extraction 2, which is a Netflix original.
[00:00:49] It's directed by Sam Hargrave, written by Joe Russo of Avengers fame
[00:00:56] and Captain America, Winter Soldier and Civil War fame.
[00:00:59] Star is Chris Hemsworth, Bill Sheetha Farani, who's amazing love her, Adam Bessa and a few others.
[00:01:07] And the synopsis is after barely surviving his grievous wounds from his mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh,
[00:01:15] Tyler Rake is back and his team is ready to take on their next mission.
[00:01:19] Great synopsis.
[00:01:21] So we did review the first Extraction back when it came out.
[00:01:26] And so you can check that out if you haven't yet.
[00:01:29] I did not like the first one pretty much at all.
[00:01:32] I thought it was pretty terrible in a lot of ways and I was not really excited that they were doing another one.
[00:01:39] I like Chris Hemsworth a lot.
[00:01:41] He's really grown on me over the years.
[00:01:43] I think he's great in a variety of ways, but it was not one that I immediately sought out.
[00:01:49] This is about a year after it came out, I think.
[00:01:51] And I did hear though when it was released that it got fairly good reviews.
[00:01:56] People said it was stronger than the first.
[00:01:58] Okay, cool.
[00:02:00] I'll check it out eventually.
[00:02:02] And I think I was pleasantly surprised.
[00:02:05] I don't think it's an amazing movie like I wouldn't put it on par with the best of John Wick or Mission Impossible or something like that.
[00:02:13] I think it does suffer from being a Netflix movie.
[00:02:16] I think if I got to see this in a theater, it would be better, but can't do anything about that.
[00:02:21] I just hate the Netflix or streaming service platform in that way, which I talk about a lot.
[00:02:26] Sorry if that's a broken record at this point.
[00:02:28] But the big thing that everyone talks about there is a 25-ish minute, 20-minute long single take where it covers this entire action sequence from prison escape to being outside in the woods driving around and being on a train.
[00:02:45] Like, I don't want to spoil too much of it.
[00:02:47] But that sequence, choreography-wise technically is one of the most amazing things I've seen in a long, long time, especially when it comes to action.
[00:02:58] Like Sam Hargrave is primarily a stuntman before directing these movies.
[00:03:04] And you see that for sure.
[00:03:06] He of course focuses more on the action, which for this film and this franchise is a good thing.
[00:03:11] But that sequence with the level of choreography, the changing of locations, the camera work, the amount of extras, the fights, the explosions, the jumping from a vehicle to a train to being on foot.
[00:03:27] Like it's insane.
[00:03:28] Like I cannot really give it enough credit talking about like you kind of have to see it for yourself.
[00:03:32] Even if you don't like the rest of the movie or like the movie at all, there's no denying that that sequence is unbelievable.
[00:03:40] It's amazing.
[00:03:41] And I could watch that sequence over and over and over again.
[00:03:45] And it really does, I think in the best way.
[00:03:47] It almost feels like a really cool Call of Duty mission for any gamers out there.
[00:03:51] Like it really reminded me of how it's shot and how it's choreographed in the best way.
[00:03:57] It felt like a really fun Call of Duty or Medal of Honor mission.
[00:04:01] And so I love that.
[00:04:02] And most of it is practical.
[00:04:04] Like it's mostly stunt work, choreography, fist fights, all that stuff.
[00:04:10] So I thought it was just, it just kept going and going and going.
[00:04:14] It's like, oh my God, how long can they keep this up?
[00:04:16] And so I will absolutely give Sam Hargrave full applause and credit for pulling that off because I cannot believe how they managed to get that to work and have it all come together.
[00:04:30] So highly, highly recommend just seeing it for that alone.
[00:04:34] But I think Chris Hemsworth is great in this physically.
[00:04:37] He's great.
[00:04:38] He's got decent emotional range.
[00:04:40] I do think the reason I like this one a lot more than the first is to me they seem to realize the plot doesn't really matter.
[00:04:49] Because in the first one, one of the biggest issues was one thing visually, I thought looked kind of bad, but the plot was focused on way too much.
[00:04:58] I thought it was a little too serious, like self serious.
[00:05:00] But the first one focused way too much on a plot that I did not care about.
[00:05:03] It was convoluted.
[00:05:04] Didn't care to see what happened or anything like that.
[00:05:08] And this one, it's like, all right, let's spend two minutes, five minutes on a plot point and then let's have a 20 minute action sequence to boot.
[00:05:16] I'm like, cool.
[00:05:17] Because sorry if maybe it's a hot take, I doubt it.
[00:05:20] Don't care about the plot really in these movies.
[00:05:22] There's a few moments.
[00:05:23] I'm like, well, that's actually like kind of touching or effective.
[00:05:26] But they never linger on that too much and effectively so.
[00:05:30] The rest of the action very well done.
[00:05:32] It's very inventive, very unexpected and keeps you on your toes.
[00:05:38] And even like the tactics being in the military myself, I'm not an expert in any way, but the tactics of the gunfights and moving into a building that seem to be much more reminiscent and realistic as to what I've learned in my career so far.
[00:05:53] Maybe I'm in minority there.
[00:05:54] I don't know, but to me at least at least how it's shot, how it's put together that seemed to have more of a realism to it.
[00:06:00] And I like that good score.
[00:06:03] There are points where the CG is maybe a little questionable, but not a big issue overall.
[00:06:07] It's mostly practical from what I could tell.
[00:06:10] And I really like the Austria setting.
[00:06:12] That's really good.
[00:06:14] And I will even though I don't think this movie is a five out of five masterpiece.
[00:06:18] I'll watch another, you know, especially if they can keep up doing a really, really creative action.
[00:06:23] I'm there for that because there's no denying that regardless of how good the story is or not, if you can put a great piece of technical action and production together.
[00:06:35] Hey, that's impressive.
[00:06:37] You don't need to have everything be perfect.
[00:06:40] You know, it's OK to just be action is my absolute strong suit.
[00:06:44] So I'm going to go all out for that.
[00:06:45] That's fine, especially being a stuntman like Sam Hargrave is so pleasantly surprised.
[00:06:52] As I said, would recommend it.
[00:06:54] I think there are worse ways to spend two hours.
[00:06:56] I'll be there for extraction three.
[00:06:58] I think they've already announced that.
[00:07:00] So yeah, check it out.
[00:07:02] That is a heavy three and a half out of five.
