[00:00:00] Hey everybody, please make sure to go ahead and rate review and subscribe. Thanks 49

[00:00:06] Let's get to another best picture nominee from this year which is the seventh one that we've done so far seven out of ten

[00:00:14] And we will be doing all ten. Let's get to past lives which is a South Korean drama

[00:00:20] It's written and directed by Celine Song, stars Greta Lee, T.O.U.

[00:00:28] Not a lot of other big names and

[00:00:31] Oh John McGarro, he's also in it

[00:00:34] And the synopsis is Nora and Hay Sung two deeply connected childhood friends are

[00:00:40] rested apart after Nora's family immigrates from South Korea

[00:00:44] 20 years later they're reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny

[00:00:51] So I didn't know much

[00:00:54] At all about this one going in. I didn't know the story anything. I didn't know about the director or basically anything

[00:01:00] And right off the bat, I thought this movie was amazing like

[00:01:06] Definitely one of the bests of the nominees for sure easily being a directorial debut

[00:01:13] Amazing like it is directed and written so

[00:01:17] Thoughtfully and gracefully like it's way better than a lot of directors who've been doing it for a long time

[00:01:22] So I can't wait to see what Celine Song does next

[00:01:26] There was such a and I like South Korean movies in general, but

[00:01:30] for whatever reason there was such a

[00:01:33] Calm and comfort and quiet to this movie that like I had an experience in a long time

[00:01:39] And the two leads are amazing perfect together

[00:01:44] the

[00:01:45] Ideas it almost reminded me in some ways of the movie her with walking Phoenix where

[00:01:51] It's one of the few movies where you

[00:01:54] Think about and have time to think about the ideas as you're watching it. So it's not only

[00:01:59] Interesting commentary and ideas. It's also an entertaining movie

[00:02:04] And this is probably the first movie since in terms of romantic films that I've had that same thought

[00:02:10] because there's a lot of space a lot of time to breathe

[00:02:14] In this movie and it gives you that

[00:02:16] opportunity to

[00:02:18] Think about your past experiences and I guess the biggest thing overall for anyone who is unfamiliar

[00:02:26] It does get into the idea of the what if person in your life

[00:02:29] You know the what if love like what if it worked out with this person and not with this person

[00:02:34] What if they came back into my life and things were totally different and

[00:02:40] All that is very very interesting feels very earnest

[00:02:44] And I think the stuff towards the end not to spoil it

[00:02:46] But where both people are dealing with how

[00:02:51] I'm in different places in my life right now

[00:02:54] I love this person. I've had such

[00:02:56] Amazing experiences and feelings in the past for this person

[00:03:01] But I'm in a different place in my life

[00:03:03] What do I do am I with the right person now?

[00:03:07] Should I break things off and go with them like it's very very multifaceted and

[00:03:14] So subtle at the same time like it's not in your face. It's very

[00:03:18] delicate and how it

[00:03:20] presents all of those

[00:03:22] Moments and memories and experiences and questions

[00:03:25] And I think it's something that everybody probably goes through at some point in their life

[00:03:30] And if you haven't yet, you probably will

[00:03:32] so

[00:03:33] I thought it was a fantastic movie. I'm so glad that it did get

[00:03:39] Oscar attention because I didn't know anything about this movie before

[00:03:43] The nomination came out I had not heard of it and I think it easily could have been

[00:03:48] swept under the rug if it did not get the best picture in nomination

[00:03:51] I think maybe a few other things I could be wrong but at least the best picture

[00:03:55] So I would highly recommend it highly recommend it

[00:03:59] I cannot wait to rewatch it

[00:04:01] And it's only about 90 minutes so not too long either

[00:04:06] Yeah love it so much

[00:04:09] That is a heavy five out of five

[00:04:13] So
