[00:00:00] 37. Let's get to another short film which is Blade Runner 2049 2036 Nexus Dawn which is a one of three prequel short films that came out with Blade Runner 2049 and I only got around to seeing these in the last couple of months and

[00:00:22] as I said on the last daily I will be doing short films all of this week. I just tried to find a cool variety of them. So 2036 Nexus Dawn which all of these are on YouTube and I think it's probably with the blu-ray editions as

[00:00:38] well like it's a special feature but it's on YouTube. Directed by Luke Scott which is Ridley Scott's son. Stars Jared Leto, Benedict Wong, Ned Denehy, Aid Sephara, Ania Marcin and Seth Soistrand. And the synopsis is Neander Wallace demonstrates the merits of a new type of replicant to lawmakers.

[00:01:03] So I think when 2049 came out I had heard about these being released as a companion but I just didn't have a huge interest in seeing them and so it took me a while to get around to them. I love Jared Leto that's maybe a hot take and I

[00:01:20] say that a lot on the show so if you listen to a lot of episodes you probably know that but I don't think he's an amazing breathtaking actor. I do really love 30 Seconds to Mars but as an actor he doesn't always get it right but

[00:01:35] I appreciate him for always trying to do something different and that's sort of a rarity nowadays and I think that he goes so far out there that I enjoy his successes as much as his failures performance wise and I don't think he's

[00:01:49] terrible in anything but I do sort of have a soft spot for Jared Leto for a variety of reasons. But I really like him in Blade Runner 2049 as the replicant creator guy I think he's very good in that role and he fits it very very well.

[00:02:09] As for the short film, these films aren't needed. I think this could have even been included in the feature film like as a quick flashback you know I don't think these short films... not that there's anything wrong with doing it because

[00:02:23] they are so small in terms of the impact or why did you do this it's a waste of time whatever like I am kind of indifferent to doing this sort of stuff but as always I would just prefer them to add these short films in one way or

[00:02:39] the other into the actual movie. But the short is about seven minutes long so pretty quick and Benedict Wong is an awesome character actor love him and the main point of this film is Jared Leto showing off one of these new replicants

[00:02:56] who are purely just like human slaves like here cut yourself hurt yourself do this do that and the person completely obliges and is only looking out for Jared Leto or their master there's no regard for themselves and so it's pretty

[00:03:11] as 2049 gets into a lot that idea of what it means to be human and the ideas of replicants being within society and telling the difference between people and replicants and all that stuff I think is interesting it's pretty

[00:03:27] unsettling in how they go about showing what the new replicants are like in this short and Jared Leto's sort of godlike nature in terms of hey I created all these people I can do what I want this needs to be a part of our world now and

[00:03:44] those debates there you know I think it fits into the movie fairly decently so also the score is excellent it looks good it's only in one room but it still looks pretty good other than that not a whole lot else to say it's worth checking

[00:03:59] out if you're curious about more Blade Runner world-building I guess you could call it or if you haven't seen 2049 and you are hesitant to just start watching the movie since it's almost three hours maybe start with one of these I don't

[00:04:12] know maybe that'll do it for you but check it out it's well done it's well put together well acted so yeah that is a four out of five
