[00:00:01] [SPEAKER_00]: 183 Let's get to the fifth film in the Purge franchise so far and the last one we'll be

[00:00:07] [SPEAKER_00]: talking about, which is The Forever Purge.

[00:00:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Came out in 2021, three years later after the first Purge.

[00:00:14] [SPEAKER_00]: It is directed by Everardo Gaut, written once again though by James DeMonaco, stars Anya,

[00:00:20] [SPEAKER_00]: like Raguera, Tanak Huerta, Josh Lucas, Levin Rambin, Cassidy Freeman, and the synopsis is

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_00]: all the rules are broken as a sect of lawless marauders decide that the annual Purge does

[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_00]: not stop at Daybreak and instead should never end.

[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_00]: So if I'm not mistaken this one did come out in COVID so it was pretty under the

[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_00]: radar, kind of got swept under the rug unfortunately.

[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see it till maybe six months, eight months after it came out at least.

[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And like with the first Purge where it was in origin I thought this idea was a cool

[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: interesting new take and what possibilities could happen with the Purge where as the

[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_00]: synopsis says, Purge is forever.

[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey let's not stop after 12 hours, let's just keep going.

[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's just keep killing and causing violence and chaos.

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I was like okay well that could lend itself to some interesting ideas and sequences so

[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm in for sure.

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And this director he hasn't really done much so I was like okay well not really the person

[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I would choose but at least it's someone different than DeMonaco.

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that the movie, I've seen it two times now I'm pretty sure it's

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_00]: okay it would be in the middle of the pack and probably the biggest problem about

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_00]: the concept of it being the forever Purge is to me what makes the Purge

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_00]: interesting at its core is the time constraint.

[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_00]: You know it's not the world is filled with violence as the wild, wild west

[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_00]: because really whether it's a anarchy sort of film an apocalyptic film

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_00]: whatever a western we've seen that a million times where there's just violence

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_00]: all over the place no one's safe we have seen that.

[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: We don't need to see it again especially done so in such a shallow way with not

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_00]: much going on underneath.

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_00]: So I think that while the title is intriguing like oh crap that'd be crazy

[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_00]: it's really not that interesting because you lose okay this needs to happen

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_00]: during the Purge we need to get this done you know we this that the other

[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_00]: it's well even if the purge is over let's just keep go and it's like that's

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_00]: really not watching it it's really not that compelling.

[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I do really like though the setting of the movie I think it's shot really well

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I like the western feel like I like the idea of a western purge I think

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_00]: that's really cool and the masks and as with all the movies the character

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_00]: designs of the purgers on point like the I think it's in the poster where

[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: there's the guy in the horse with the American flag and he's in all black and

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_00]: he has the mask I think the designs are good I think there's like a bunny rabbit

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_00]: mask and a guy with like a sort of a scarecrow from Batman kind of hood on

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_00]: his face I think all those really are creepy and disturbing but it really ends

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_00]: there in terms of the excitement because like the guy on the horse I

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_00]: would love to know alright where'd you come from how did this come to

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_00]: be like not say I would sympathize with him or want to understand him or

[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_00]: forgive him I'm like let's get to know these people in one way or the other

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_00]: to where they're not just a blank villainous face they're not just an

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_00]: evil presence because this is the fifth one in the franchise we know that

[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_00]: they're evil you know we don't need to have just a visual confirmation of

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_00]: that let's expand it a little bit I'll be fine if this movie was an extra

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_00]: 15-20 minutes and they really took the time to build up these characters a

[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_00]: little bit more on both sides to make things a little bit more memorable

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_00]: because it really just skips by a lot of things and really one of the only

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_00]: things that sticks out to me dialogue wise is that conversation when the

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_00]: people on the ranch are caught by the purgers and the older guy like the

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_00]: father is talking to the leader of this purge group and the purgers are

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_00]: saying essentially we're doing politicians work they love us they

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_00]: worship us you know we're helping to maintain a sense of America again you

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_00]: know build America back and we are very much valued and all that and so it

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_00]: really sadly is like almost like a brainwash sort of thing and so I think

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_00]: that that conversation like this is really interesting like this is actually

[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_00]: like hitting on something that is very relevant but then it's like alright well

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_00]: it's over let's get to violence let's get to the next cool mask and we're done

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_00]: with that and so that is a big big let down even though I appreciate that

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_00]: it's there but besides that I think the opening sequence where the purgers

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_00]: invade the property on the ranch and like the girl gets caught on the animal

[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_00]: lock like cage thing and then you see the purgers hovering above her and then in

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_00]: the I think it's like a horse barn or something like there's a lot of cool

[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_00]: locations and it's against shot well to where I feel like I'm visually

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_00]: engaged not just with the masks but with lighting with cinematography

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_00]: especially considering what it is and the golden brownish color palette I think

[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_00]: looks really really good some specific scenes that are not too bad is the one in

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_00]: the bar and I think it is where this guy almost gets his head pushed onto a

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_00]: moving motorcycle wheel there's also the attack by the construction worker

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_00]: purgers I think that's a pretty simple but effective design for the character

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_00]: and then also the attack by the neo-nazi group there's the sequence in El Paso

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_00]: that's good and the stuff towards the end maybe gets a little too mad maxi with

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_00]: the vehicles and stuff but I still think it's alright and I like the idea of it

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_00]: being right at the border and crossing the border I think all that's

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_00]: effective so it's one that I feel like I could pop on if I want to watch a

[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: purge movie it's inoffensive there's nothing horrible about it like there

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_00]: is with election year it's just very a little too average it's just too vanilla

[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_00]: at times and coming after the first purge it doesn't have the I think the vision

[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_00]: or the cohesiveness as that one does I am curious to see what they do with the

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_00]: sixth and supposedly last movie I don't know if it's gonna be a continuation

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_00]: after this one or if it's just gonna be in its own little world I kind of

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_00]: hope it's a completely new concept as these last few have been I think

[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_00]: that's really where this franchise sets itself apart because it's trying mostly

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_00]: to build the world up rather than just continue with the same two characters

[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_00]: throughout the whole thing and their one journey which that's fine but I want

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_00]: also quickly really like the score that's one good thing the score is

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_00]: very minimal but I really really do like it so that is a heavy three out of
