[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, well with that done let's go back in time a little bit. Let's talk about Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes remake

[00:00:08] [SPEAKER_00]: This one came out in 2001 done by Burton

[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Stars Mark Wahlberg, Helen Baum Carter, Tim Roth, Michael Clark Duncan, Paul Giamatti, Estella Warren

[00:00:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Chris Christopherson

[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Few others and the synopsis is in 2029 an Air Force astronaut

[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_00]: crashed lands on a mysterious planet where evolved talking apes dominate a race of primitive humans.

[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see this one probably until I'd seen all the other films both the new trilogy and then the original

[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Franchise because I had heard this one was like alright. This is a low point for Tim Burton. It's the worst one. It's unnecessary

[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Marked the decline of Tim Burton

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: And I just put it off for a long long time and finally got around to watching it

[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_00]: And it was probably the last Tim Burton movie that I hadn't seen up to that point as well

[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: and I don't think I have a

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_00]: New take on it for you. I think it is pretty bad. I don't think it's horrible

[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be I think it's passable, but it does feel wholly unnecessary

[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Mark Wahlberg

[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Terrible in the movie. He's very miscast and I think that it is good that he has figured out

[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_00]: what works for him in terms of performance because

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_00]: He definitely has some duds in his career in terms of just not being comfortable in a role and this is one of them

[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_00]: He's so bland and the writing itself is not great, but he is not very good in the movie

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_00]: He's not compelling as a hero. Not very charismatic not emotionally compelling and

[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_00]: overall feels quite insincere

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_00]: but

[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Before I go into all the bad stuff one thing that is amazing

[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_00]: That seems unanimous is the makeup the makeup costume design is

[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Fantastic one of the best examples of practical effects and makeup for a sci-fi film like this so that I will always appreciate

[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_00]: I will always praise

[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not one I ever feel the need to go back to unless I'm reviewing it like I am for this

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_00]: But that makeup is spot-on

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Some of Tim Burton's best in terms of the detail the overall design. It's really really good

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_00]: But sadly the rest of the movie not up to snuff in that way

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Everybody else in the movie is alright. Paul Giamatti's fun. Helen of Baum Carter's good her

[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_00]: relationship with

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Mark Wahlberg is a little weird, but the rest of movie feels so flat and biggest problem

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_00]: By far is the whole movie feels quite dull like there's not good suspense

[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_00]: There's not good emotion. The final action sequence is very underwhelming and

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Considering the budget it should feel way more epic more grand and way more in line with something like the new trilogy

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_00]: but it feels like it has about a fifth of that budget in terms of the scale the

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_00]: overall

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_00]: grandness and

[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Scope of the world. It feels very small and not in an interesting way. It feels

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Quite lazy and not fleshed out not rich in lore like the originals are and like the new trilogy is and

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_00]: I guess to sum it up in short long story short quite forgettable quite flatlined for the most part

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: There's not really many scenes that I think oh, I really love that or I didn't love the movie

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_00]: But this scene was really good or that performance was really good. It's all very

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_00]: average at best and I fully agree sadly with the reputation that it has by most it's

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_00]: one of Tim Burton's worst and I do think in some ways it is the start of the

[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_00]: decline of Tim Burton because while I do love a lot of his recent movies there is

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_00]: around this time for whatever reason a big difference in quality and I

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Guess you could call it

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Creativity in his movies and I feel like this was a bit of a stepping stone and also Danny Elfman in a way

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Which is too bad because I'm not against them remaking this movie or the original

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not against that in any way or any movie like if you can do it

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, you can do a new take you can add this or that do it

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_00]: but

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_00]: It is even more shocking that Tim Burton produced this movie because you would think of all the people in Hollywood at the time

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Tim Burton would be a great choice for this

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_00]: And he does add certain Burton isms, but not much and not enough to really elevate it to be anything interesting anything memorable

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Just a little sleep inducing at times, but I am still a defender of it to a certain degree. I would put it

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Probably at the very bottom or at least second from the bottom of the whole franchise

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_00]: so not one that you need to rush out and see or if

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_00]: You haven't seen any of the Planet of the Apes movies don't start with this one

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I would probably either start with rise or if not that then the original

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I wish I could like it more and maybe over time. It'll grow on me

[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_00]: I really really doubt it, but I am in the majority here. It's not a very good movie and

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I can fully see why it's been swept under the rug as it seems to have been over the years

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_00]: So that one is a three out of five
