[00:00:01] [SPEAKER_01]: 171, let's get to the fifth and final entry in the Indiana Jones franchise which is
[00:00:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which came out in 2023.
[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_01]: It is directed by James Mangold who also did Logan, Night and Day walk the line, the Wolverine
[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and some others.
[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh Ford versus Ferrari as another for him, big one.
[00:00:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And, for starters, Harrison Ford as well as Phoebe Waller Bridge and Tonyo Banderis,
[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Karen Allen, John Reece Davies and you know, Karen Allen or back, Shantay Renee Wilson, Toby
[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Jones, Thomas Cretchman, Mads Mikkelson and some others.
[00:00:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And this nuptis is archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary
[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_01]: artifact that can change the course of history.
[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_01]: So, I think with how Ford was received, this movie was definitely a surprise to many.
[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, they're going to do one more.
[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_01]: And before this one was announced, I was not really a certified indie head.
[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd seen them but I was not like through the roof about it.
[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And then said, alright, well, I am definitely curious.
[00:01:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I want to see how this franchise ends.
[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I've seen the first four.
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's do it.
[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_01]: And even though this movie is not perfect and I can see if you're middle the road on it
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_01]: similar to four, I get that.
[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, this is just purely personal taste so bear with me watching this movie and then
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_01]: it also helped watching the timeless heroes documentary on Disney plus as well as the
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_01]: making of any and Jones in the dial of Destiny which is like a 45 minute behind the scenes
[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_01]: look.
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_01]: That just cemented my love for this franchise beyond all of us.
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know exactly why maybe it's just a combination of reasons that I've already talked
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: about.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to retread all that but watching this one, even though it's not my favorite,
[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_01]: it'd be I think three in a middle of the pack ranking wise.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_01]: There is something about the heart of this movie and how it decides to resolve those characters
[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: in this world that just really hits me.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like it's to me, it's very emotional especially towards the end.
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's one that I can always go back to.
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a very in this day and age even more so than kingdom of the crystal skull, the classic
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_01]: traditional action movie and adventure story that this is.
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_01]: You don't really get that anymore these days.
[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, despite the flaws it still has so many elements that really feel out of time
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_01]: in a good way for me.
[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_01]: So now having to see the movie I rewatch it all the time maybe four times five times
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_01]: and I've seen the documentary two or three times as well.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_01]: That's just something that I will always appreciate and I can always go back to and really
[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_01]: get into and enjoy.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think, you know, James Mangold when I heard it wasn't Spielberg, I was disappointed
[00:02:52] flat out.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And hindsight, I would have preferred him having done the first four.
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I wish he had done the fifth one and just have that cohesiveness of vision.
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think I could be wrong but I think it was because of the West Side story remake that
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_01]: he was doing that he couldn't direct it of when they were planning I could be wrong
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_01]: there in terms of what he was doing at the time.
[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Even though I like James Mangold a lot, I think Logan especially is amazing.
[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I like really everything he's done to a certain extent and of all the choices.
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't even know who I would pick besides Spielberg but I think of all the people.
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he's a bad choice.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: He has good Western adventure aspects to his filmmaking.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_01]: He also has some good character work.
[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_01]: So I think he's a pretty well-rounded filmmaker and I think overall the direction of this
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_01]: is pretty good.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not Spielberg but it's still pretty good.
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And as I was talking about with four seeing any of Jones as like an 80-year-old guy coming
[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_01]: out of retirement basically and having to keep up with all the young people.
[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_01]: And there's humor there, there's the kind of respect and appreciation that he's still trying
[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and that he has to accept himself.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't do all these things like I used to.
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to make more mistakes.
[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to tie her out.
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to, you know, I could get myself killed way more likely than I would if I was in
[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: my 20s or 30s or 40s even.
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So I think I really, really like that and that also gives you that life of a character of when
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_01]: he puts up his hat for the last time.
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and another quick thing that I saw.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Now I did remember seeing this in the news.
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I could be telling Tails that school here by thinking this was true at least.
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Was a rumor.
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Take it with the grain of salt, but I remember when I think this was first announced that there
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_01]: were some people saying that they were going to try and reboot the character in some way and
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: have it be younger as opposed to being Harrison Ford old.
[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_01]: And I heard that Chris Pratt was apparently like a fan favorite to do that or a favorite of
[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know the internet.
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I am so thankful that did not happen.
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I think Chris Pratt, he's really kind of lost on me now.
[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I think he's become pretty boring as an actor for the most part.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I used to really love him and look forward to everything he's in.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think he's really lost all this edge.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_01]: A lot of his charm.
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, that upsets people but I am so glad they did not recast him as Chris Pratt.
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And I hope they never ever do.
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Sorry Chris, but it's Harrison Ford.
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_01]: You gotta have him.
[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_01]: So that was a big relief.
[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_01]: That would have been horrible.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_01]: But talking about the past of the movie itself besides Ford, Phoebe Waller Bridge,
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_01]: love her and everything.
[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I think she is so funny and she now clearly has some good versatility in what she can do.
[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_01]: She's a great character in the world and I think the writing is very strong as well.
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Matt's Mikkelson, fantastic actor, so underrated he's a perfect villain in this very, very good
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_01]: like the design of the character and Antonio Banderis.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_01]: He pops up for a little bit.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_01]: The young boy in this who it was his first role, I don't can't find his name here.
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_01]: He's very, very good.
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I love him.
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_01]: He just has a good youthfulness to him and charm and wildness as well.
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And then actually talking about, you know, because the movie is not perfect, believe
[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_01]: myth that having watched it many times now,
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't mind if they de-age an actor to show a flashback.
[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm generally okay with that because you can pretty much make it look good at this time,
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_01]: at least mostly believable.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And effects wise visually how they de-age heres forward for that opening 20-minute sequence is,
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, solid.
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't really have an issue with that but I feel like it could have been shortened.
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I think all the action is awesome and I like spending time in the world war two setting
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and that night chase with the train and moving through the train and the slide of hand and
[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_01]: misdirection and even the stuff in the church where he's being tied up and then the missile hits
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_01]: there. I think that's a really good opening and I know from what I heard they were planning a
[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_01]: shorter, like a five-minute sequence to have him de-age and then they were going to get into the rest
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: of the story and I.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_01]: It's maybe it's hard to say exactly what would be better,
[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_01]: like with what they had planned originally but I feel like it goes on a little too long for
[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_01]: what the movie is for what the overall story is. So I think that sequence, I don't mind it being
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_01]: two and a half hours long honestly I wish it could have been three and a half hours but I think
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_01]: that that opening piece does it's a little too extended for what it is but not a huge deal.
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Then we get into any of Jones where he's retiring from teaching and then Phoebe Waller Bridge
[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_01]: shows up and gets him wrapped up into this last adventure and having watched the documentaries,
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_01]: the production design and all the stuff that is practical in this movie is insane like creating
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_01]: whole parades, all these huge rooms and it's really it shows you when you have the right cast,
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: the right money and you know right budget you can do insane things if you choose to with how
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_01]: authentic and how real you create an actual movie set not everything has to be effects.
[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_01]: You know and so that's another thing as I appreciate is they say all right let's do
[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_01]: as many things practical as we can even if it's not Spielberg it's like all right let's do
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: the least amount of crazy CG that we can. So the whole parade chase where he's on the horse
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_01]: and then he goes down to the subway that's very good the little chase in the office and the
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: library like that's right beforehand and then they get put into the truck that's very entertaining
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_01]: like I'm always entertained because whole movie maybe some people get bored or think it's too
[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_01]: bloated I don't feel that way I'm always engaged and one of the biggest set pieces of
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: movie is the 10-year motorcycle car chase and I think that one thing with mangled is
[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I think some of the action as with the first opening each one sometimes goes on a little too long you
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_01]: should say all right let's cut this here and get into something else so I think even though I'm
[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: really enjoy all that happens in that sequence I think it does at times like oh wow this is still going
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: you know and I don't think it really needs to for what the movie it is I get it's they're trying
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_01]: to make money and I know this movie did horribly at the box office or not horribly but it did lose
[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_01]: quite a bit of money which is really a shame I wish I had done $2 billion but that's not the case and
[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it ever would be but I do like the reintroduction of Sala briefly I like how he
[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_01]: shows up and he said give him hell in the end of Jones I think just little callbacks to like the
[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_01]: originals and that those old relationships feel very lived in the authentic you know I believe
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_01]: that those were people who saw each other decades ago and they're reuniting the score of course by
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_01]: John Williams amazing that theme never gets old will always cherish it and I can just go back and
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_01]: listen to the whole score of all the movies and really just escape into Indiana Jones world.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_01]: There's also the I think one of the coolest most creative sequences is the underwater scuba
[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_01]: sequence with the eels I think that's really clever and that's a very effectively concise
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_01]: action piece where it's really maybe five minutes something like that but it's really intense
[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_01]: suspense for a good showcase for all right little bits of action can work just as much as
[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_01]: 20 minute long ones but one of the biggest parts of the movie is that and I love this I know
[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_01]: some people may like with crystal skull where they say oh you're going too far into supernatural stuff
[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_01]: or it's too ridiculous I get the criticism I don't feel that way with these movies I think
[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_01]: the idea of and I wasn't expecting it either but the idea of Indiana Jones literally going back
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_01]: time and seeing the people who he has studied for his whole life is so touching and I think
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_01]: the moment where he's like I'm going to stay you know I want to be here I've I'm actually
[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_01]: getting to live in history and having spent decades and decades studying it teaching it
[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_01]: discovering it I think that is so human and real and very heartfelt that I really was not expecting
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_01]: it to hit as hard as it did for me and maybe that's because I love history so much but I think that
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_01]: whole visual like the effects amazing where they go into ancient times and there's that massive war
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_01]: or battle going on and then there's the plane flying over and everyone thinking it's a dragon you know
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: in the in the shooting and the machine guns down onto the ships and the crash with indie I think
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_01]: all that is really intense and so epic and cool and what is another good writing moment besides
[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_01]: just any in Jones saying I'm going to stay is clearly if he did we wouldn't have any in a Jones
[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_01]: before you know he would not be a person that within the context of the world that we know
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_01]: so that there's no good we can't have that and so feebee wall or bridge realizes that like no
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I understand what you're saying but punch in the face you're coming with me I think that is
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_01]: spot on writing because in another franchise you could say or you could see them saying all right
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_01]: he's just going to stay you know that's what people want that's what's going to be the most
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_01]: affecting or the most cool but in this no that's not who the character really is or should be
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_01]: to me at least I think that is a very good ending because you get time to spend in that moment
[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_01]: always like I want to stay I think this is so interesting and so it's hitting me so hard I can't
[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_01]: leap but then you get the reality check of feebee wall or bridge so I love that and even before
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_01]: that the whole cave sequence where they're having to be under through the different tunnels and
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_01]: the water all that's very good and compelling so I think that this movie you know there are flaws
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_01]: as I said and I you know understand if this is just man for you or not how you want to end it
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_01]: it's it is what it is I get it you know it's to each the realm but like how they have ended the
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_01]: franchise with this movie at least with Indiana Jones that character maybe they'll find a way to
[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_01]: reboot it in another part of the world without indie you know but still in the world of Indiana
[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Jones I don't know but I like here he's 80 years old now Harrison Ford is very old this is the end of
[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_01]: franchise so I think that's a very daring respectable choice to make storytelling wise oh and briefly
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_01]: the moment we're there on the plane and actually even the look of feebee wall or bridge
[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_01]: writing the motorcycle in the rain to get on the plane amazing love that visual looks so good effects
[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_01]: wise lighting cinematography really good sequence and then when she gets on the plane and then mad
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_01]: mecosin's character realizes oh crap I haven't thought of this all the way through and the
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Indiana Jones helps him realize that and then there's this huge portal in the sky and they zoom into
[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_01]: it and you know crash land that's really invented so all that is strong and that final little
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_01]: resolution with Indiana Jones being home and saying why did you do this like why am I here who am I
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_01]: living for and then Marion walks in and that's really the end of the story that's all he needs
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_01]: he's done his job he's done more than enough so he can literally hang up his hat
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and spin the rest of his life in peace I really really like that and it just works so much better
[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_01]: than a lot of other franchises like it and Indiana Jones just rules the guys the best he's king
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_01]: alright well that one is a heavy four and a half out of five
