410: Love Lies Bleeding

[00:00:00] 117. Let's get to the new film Love Lies Bleeding, which is an A24 production and it's on VOD for rent and purchase right now. It's directed by Rose Glass who also did Saint Maude and stars Kristen Stewart, Katie O'Brien, Dave Franco and a

[00:00:23] few others and the synopsis is, gym manager Lou falls for Jackie, a bodybuilder who is passing through town en route to a competition in Las Vegas. So I didn't know much about this one or that it was coming out I just saw it I think it

[00:00:41] premiered at some festivals and got some buzz and I'm a big big Kristen Stewart fan I think she's gone on to have a very great post Twilight career and I love watching whatever she's in I didn't know much else about the story or the

[00:00:56] rest of the cast or anything I liked st. Maude which is the director's first feature and I didn't love it as much as some people did I think I need to rewatch

[00:01:05] it but I wasn't through the roof about it so that wasn't a huge draw but I was still curious considering the overall production of it and I think it is quite good on first viewing it's very strange it's dark it has sort of a more twisted

[00:01:24] Thelma and Louise true romance kind of vibe like 90s vibe to it and this is definitely one of Kristen Stewart's best performances as of late I mean she's been great and everything but she's really really good in this and Katie

[00:01:39] O'Brien I don't think I've seen her in much if anything she is amazing in this not only emotionally but physically as well so that relationship that chemistry was spot-on and the rest of the cast like Ed Harris, Dave Franco everybody's

[00:01:54] very good and the scores by Clanton Mansell it's a very good score so I think that for what it is it's very small self-contained your typical a24 kind of crime thriller movie but for what it sets out to do I think it does

[00:02:13] very well and some of the fantastical supernatural imagery I was not expecting at all towards the end I won't spoil it because it is still pretty new and it really does come out of nowhere and I think for the most part I liked it there

[00:02:28] is something towards the end where it's like so surreal and huge for lack of a better word that it really is like what the hell kind of moment but I think it worked for me it's kind of goofy but I don't think it's really meant to be

[00:02:42] taken seriously so I like that it was unexpected but I think it worked for the most part and there is some weird offbeat humor like I think Kristen Stewart's character whether that's writing or her performance she's very

[00:02:57] funny in this and unexpectedly funny like it's just sort of out of the blue dry off-the-cuff humor so that worked for me it has a very odd tone overall but not really in a bad way so I think it is definitely one of my favorites of

[00:03:12] the year so far it's not a masterpiece for me maybe it'll continue to grow more and more over time I don't know but I think as a initial viewing it is very worth watching very unique very refreshing in how it's told the

[00:03:27] locations are great oh and actually being a New Mexico resident right now it's shot in New Mexico and they make a point of saying that in the end credits so for any New Mexico residents it is shot there which I do not know and some

[00:03:40] locations even sort of seemed somewhat familiar maybe I'm crazy there but I think it did seem like I could maybe know what some of those spots were perhaps more in the countryside sequences so yeah other than that not

[00:03:56] too much else to say Dave Franco's character is pretty wild but I think he works in this I didn't know he was in this and he's good I love seeing Jenna Malone she's great and everything she's a great character actor so very well

[00:04:08] stacked and the violence is very quick and shocking and sudden so all that was very effective so give it a look that is a heavy four out of five
